Help Rica Mae in her fight against Leukemia

Update posted by Nelda Arvesu On Jan 08, 2019

It was a day after new year when we received the news that she can be discharged on Jan 6 if she continues to feel better. Thank you Lord and after spending a month in the hospital, she was discharged. We expected that she is feeling well but to our surprise, she is feverish and still cannot walk on her own.

Today, is her scheduled checkup so she goes to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center again. Her mom said they will conduct the complete blood count(cbc) test. The next news I receive is that she is admitted again and currently in ICU.

Please continue to pray for strength and healing. Her next chemotherapy is on February but the date is still to be decided depending on the availability of the doctor and funds.

Based on the campaign page, we have not reached the amount to pay for the first chemotherapy. But few days before Christmas, the Heed Foundation which also sponsored Rica Mae's scholarship in university offered to pay her first chemo session. Because of this on Dec 29, 2018, Rica Mae started her first chemo. But due to liver complication, the first chemotherapy cannot be done in one day to avoid severe damage on her liver. She had them on the 29th and 31st of Dec 2018 and today, Jan 2, 2019. The second chemo session starts in 28 days. The effects of chemotherapy are already observed. She had fever (but goes down as of this writing), felt nauseous, red eyes but the worrisome is that her vision is now blurry and cannot read. Yesterday, Jan 1, based on the initial eye test, it shows that there are broken blood vessels in her eyes. Because of this, she needs to see a retinal specialist this week. She had another platelet transfusion yesterday. Let's continue praying for her fast recovery and may her body responds to treatment positively with less complications.

By the way, Rica wrote a note to me and as part of it she said, "Thank you sa mga donors ko. Promise, magpapagaling ako." (Thank you to my donors. I promise to get well.")

The result of bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow biopsy is out today and it is confirmed that Rica Mae is in the early stage of Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Because of this, she needs to undergo chemotherapy for 4 months and take oral medicines.

Currently, she is still in ICU and needs platelet transfusion as soon as possible. She has fever and can't move her legs due to BMA. She is also taking antibiotics to treat the pneumonia she gets while i the hospital.

The doctor said the expected cost for the chemotherapy alone is almost half a million piso. Apart from the money we need, the procedure can cause severe bleeding, thus, we are still looking for blood donors especially O+ blood type for platelet transfusion.

The good news is that the survival rate after the chemotherapy is 80-90%.

Rica Mae's platelet is still very low and the doctor said she needs platelet transfusion. Currently, we are in search of donors with O+ blood type. If you have this type and willing to donate, please go to Amang Rodriguez Memorial medical Center.

Bone Marrow Aspiration and Bone Biopsy have been done and sent to UST and St Lukes for series of tests to confirm the possibility of acute leukemia.

Thank you for those who donated and helped. Because of your kind heart, we were able to afford the costs of these tests.

Rica Mae is still in ICU Charity and in need of blood donors. Likewise, any amount is still greatly appreciated which will contribute to the ongoing hostpital costs and treatment.

HI please also see my fundraising for my niece who needs a liver transplant. We only need less than a hundred thousand pesos for her transplant to be possible.
