Campaign Story
Our work in Guimaras Province (Visayas), the Philippines has had a good track record since 2011 in helping parents and concerned citizens to report problems with the local public schools in 5 municipalities in Guimaras. Our persistent monitoring, support, and follow-up with the local and national governments have been successful to encourage the government to pay more attention and mobilize budgets (which usually already available) to repair/add classrooms and toilets, provide textbooks and increase teacher-student ratio.
See links to our Stories of Change: 1. More Help for Guimaras Island Schools, 2.Like Raising My Own Child, 3. Volunteers' Queries Raise Transparency in Schools, 4. Rural folks choose school improvement to fight poverty
Up to now MANY PROBLEMS REMAIN UNADDRESSED. Examples of these are
1. lack of classrooms and toilets (example: Don Domingo Granada Memorial Elementary School)
2. Flooding (Dolores Elementary School (picture), and Jordan Central Elementary School)
3. Landslide (Salvacion High School and Simeon Jabasa High School (picture))
4. Lack of teachers (Don Domingo Granada School), and 5. Lack of electricity in outer island schools (see video).
Guimaras public schools also cater to children from very poor family (49 schools having at least 25% of enrollees receiving the government's conditional cash grant) and from indigenous groups (43 schools have IP students).
We urgently need your help to monitor and improve the condition of 30 PRIORITY SCHOOLS IN GUIMARAS.
