Help Refugees in Traiskirchen and Vienna

Update posted by Andrea Oterová On Jul 02, 2016

It is becoming very hard to find housing for refugees since March 2016, Diakonie and Fluchtlinge have an extremely limited amount of offers, while there are, to the best of our knowledge, over 1700 people on the housing waiting list in Vienna. Transfers between camps also became more difficult unless there are serious underlying health reasons requiring a move. We are still looking for a home for refugees which we help, some of which include pregnant women who live in camps where they cannot cook and conditions are not optimal.

On the positive side however, we see a lot of efforts by Caritas, Diakonie, the Red Cross and other organisations and volunteers in terms of improving the life of refugees in camps and outside of camps in Vienna. There are many language and sports courses, passes for social and cultural events, new refugee job fairs for people with asylum, health services are becoming more accessible, emergency camps have closed and people have been transferred to better places with better hygienic conditions. From our point of view, even though the overall situation of refugees is still very hard and mainly the ones in camps need a lot of support, it has changed immensely since September 2015 when we started to get involved with helping. There is still a lot to do but we consider it important to appreciate what Vienna and NGOs, volunteers are doing for refugees, many of them surely realize that. We will see what happens after the election, but we have seen significant improvements and efforts here in Vienna.

We would like to THANK our most active team members and people who joined us in helping refugees we support for their great support, advice and hard work, thank you so much both Abdullahs from the Red Corss and Primavesigasse, Benedikt, Courtney, Cheryl, Glenn, Ethel, Hajer, Merce, Sarah, Sarir, Sonia, Virginie, thank you to all the hosts, mainly the ones who were very busy with refugees lately, namely Andrea, Martina and Guntram, Michael, Verena and the family!!! Thank you so much to all the donors, the VBC club and all the private donors for your generosity! And finally, we are very thankful to all the people advising us in Diakonie, Caritas and the Red Cross.

THE CURRENT NEEDS are: Toiletries and food DM vouchers and HOFER vouchers (for housed refugees with no benefits arriving -many times they have to be without money for months; and for camps) Financial donations for necessities for refugees on low budget and camps Financial donations for metro tickets for camps (camps can get them for cheaper) Financial donations for cosmetics and basic needs for the soon to come newborn babies (a girl and a boy) ALL RECEIPTS WILL BE POSTED as always.

NEW HOUSING:

SHAFIK: April

We have been looking for housing through different sources but we have only found two places and refugees have to pay rent there. Virginie, our team member has inquired with a Priest in her area who has offered Shafik, a photographer and graphic designer from Syria whom we have known since October, a place in a shared room. The hosts are very happy with him and Shafik is quite independent, sorting things for himself and he says he is happy there. We hope that he soon hears the news of being granted an asylum and he can start working in the job he loves. He has even helped us create beautiful posters for our fundraising event, thank you Shafik for the speed and quality!!:-)

MAITHAM and ABRAR: April

We have met Maitham and Abrar with their three beautiful children, who are from Iraq, at the beginning of this year at Vordere Zollamtsstarsse camp. The camp is now closed and we have known that for a while and could not find anything for them. Therefore, our team members Sarah, Sonia and Glenn have joined forces and contributed towards their rent in a flat that they found. Soon they will move to a better, bigger flat for a similar price close to Sonia. The team has been working hard to help them integrate; they found a kindergarten spot for Ritaj, their little girl and are now looking to transfer the boys to a school close to home. We have made clothes and toys collections for them and the team is helping them with activities for children, medical visits and overall integration. The parents are also going to German courses, all is going well and we hope that soon we hear the good news that they got an asylum.

HOUSED REFUGEES, GREAT NEWS AND REFUGEES IN NEED OF HOUSING:

Housed refugees (cca. 30 people): As for the refugees we have helped house, many have integrated very well. Integration is not easy for many and for some it takes less time while others are very hesitant in moving forward, understandably. We are giving as much support as possible and there is always something to sort either with their needs, benefits, doctors, kindergartens, social engagement, language, etc.

We are very, very happy to share GREAT NEWS about some refugees we have been supporting and congratulate them :-)

Bassam!!! Firstly, we thank you for all your help in supporting refugees. Congratulations on your asylum, your passport and…your new job!!!! Sulaiman, Rahaf and family, Abdullah and Natalie, Qamar and family and Dania and Bashir, we congratulate you on your asylum and we wish you the best of luck in finding a job soon!!

We hope to soon add more congratulations for the other people :-).

We are still looking for a place for Ahmed and Doaa (from Iraq, staying at a camp), who is pregnant and giving birth to a baby girl in July; Somayeh and her boy (a political refugee from Iran, staying at a camp), she is pregnant as well and giving birth in September. Finally, we are looking for housing for Fatimah and her two children (staying at a camp), a boy aged 16 and a girl aged 8. A great lady, Hajer, is assisting them in their needs meanwhile.

We are assisting the rest of the refugees with donations and necessities and helping them sort their legal matters, such as Caritas payments, kindergarten registration, German courses, medical needs and social activities.

PICTURES of these refugees are in the previous updates, we do not post more for privacy reasons.

This last month we have been mainly focusing on collecting enough donations to buy airbeds for sick people at Vordere camp and pregnant refugees we are supporting at Lindengasse camp. We first had to get an approval from the camps since they can only be used for disadvantaged people and have to be aproved. We were not allowed to donate normal beds for hygienic reasons. Camps mostly use military beds for hygienic and practical purposes but many people cannot sleep on them and prefer to sleep on the floors! That is why we thought of helping at least pregnant women and sick people. Some people donated and we bought the rest. All together we raised and bought around 30 beds and 12 air pumps. The refugees are very happy with the change and told us that their sleep has improved a lot!

Apart from that we have taken basic donations of toiletries, food and clothes, that were given by donors, to Vordere Zollamtsstrasse camp and Primavesigasse camp.

We have also provided some money for an outing that Vordere organized for their children, they took them ice-skating so we helped them fund the rental of the skates.

Finally, we donated metro tickets and toiletries which we bought to the camps. All the receipts are in the dropbox link showed below.

Finally, we have donated a lot of play area items including tables, learning toys and wall stickers for Gasgasse shelter.

The receipts of purchases are in the dropbox folder:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7em7heybh4rrngi/AAALhB0...

Total cost:

Air beds: 404 EUR

Metro tickets: 170 EUR

Toiletries and fruit: 52.38 EUR

Underwear: 50 EUR

Ice skating for children: 30 EUR

TOTAL COST: 705.78 EUR

CURRENT NEEDS of the shelters we support:

Vordere:
There are changes hapenning at Vordere at the moment. It seems that soon only the Red Cross will be funding their donations, so we are in a transitory period. However, they need metro tickets so we can buy those meanwhile. They have told us that they can accept:

METRO TICKETS

Primavesigasse

COFFE

NAPPIES, FRUITS, VEGETABLES

MEN'S CLOTHES

TOILETRIES

Other shelters:

Refugees in camps:

Our team is supporting refugees in camps by helping them look for accommodation through different sources and spending time with them, supporting them with necessities, doctors' visits, some have bought metro cards for them. It is all aimed at making their conditions at least a bit more bearable in the camps while we look for housing.

The main updates in regards to these are:

NEW HOUSING:

We were very lucky to find housing for Wasan and Alaa and Rahaf and family (family with four children) are moving to their new home this Wednesday (we found housing for them through Fluchtlinge Willkommen), for details check the update New Housing please.

Michael and Maria got in touch with us offering their home to Wasan and Alaa with their son Fahed. They have already raised 800 EUR for their necessities and we also support them with necessities, clothes and metro tickets.

Refugees in camps:

Dania and Bashir, who are supported by Courtney, our team member, have gotten a flat with Diakonie. We are very happy about this because Dania's asthma was making her stay at the camp extremely difficult. Her husband Bashir was also sick all the time in the camp. We are collecting donations for their new home (we will post an updated list soon) and Courtney is planning to buy them metro cards.

Shafik is still looking for housing, we have put him in touch with some people who might be able to rent a place with him, they are still looking for options. If they will need guarantee we will support them.

We are supporting Doaa and Ahmed at Lindengasse. She is feeling very sick from the pregnancy and our team member Ivana took an air bed for her to sleep better. She also buys them fruits regularly. They are being transferred to Primavesigasse, we will keep looking for housing for them and help them with necessities. They are also starting a German course.

Maitham and his family of five have been in touch with us, we got them metro tickets, our volunteers are providing them with German speaking tutors to assist the children with their homework (they are enrolled at school), we area looking for a kindergarten for their smallest child Ritaj. We provide them with necessities and keep looking for housing for them.

Somayeh ( a pregnant lady with her son staying at LIndengasse camp) has been given a airbed and Monica, our team member is supporting her with necessities and doctors' visits. We are looking into an option of moving Somayeh into a better shelter, a house run by Caritas, while we look for a home for them, we hope that it works out!

Many of the refugees have been transferred to camps out of Vienna so we are in a rush to find them a place before the Vordere camp closes, which might be this May.

COSTS (detailed receipts here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/7em7heybh4rrngi/AAALhB0...):

Alaa and Wasan: metro tickets: 44 EUR

Wiener linien might soon provide a discount or some better way for refugees, but meanwhile many are getting caught by police when going to the doctors etc. If you can, please donate metro tickets by contacting us or donate with a note : *Metro tickets for refugees at shelters*. They also need toiletries. We always try to provide these until they get their benefits.

Update on RECENTLY HOUSED PEOPLE

Myriam and Ali and their beautiful baby are settling into their new home and, with the help of Richard, are sorting out their paperwork. We have found them an Arabic-speaking pediatrician and their first appointment went well. They have to go back in three weeks for a further check. This week we are focusing on making an appointment for Myriam for her six-week check. Myriam speaks some English but when it comes to health, especially of a baby, it is important to be able to communicate fully with the doctor. We have found several Arabic-speaking doctors in Vienna but are always happy to receive recommendations - please get in touch if you would like to recommend anyone (must take WGKK)!

We have bought them yearly tickets for the public transport system in Vienna so that they can travel easily to all their appointments and have taken them more in-kind donations, including clothes and baby items. Mercedes, who lives nearby, visited them on Saturday and took them some items - thank you Mercedes! Ali will start German classes this week and Myriam is going to try and study as much as she can from home, using apps and other materials.

The Jaffar children, Malak and Mustafa, started Kindergarten this week and they are enjoying it very much. Kamar is attending German classes when she can and she and Ahmad are planning to go more regularly once the children are at Kindergarten full time. Their needs are covered by their hosts and we are hoping that soon they get their benefits.

Robabeh is living on her own so she does not have much support from hosts, we are in touch with her and have helped her sort some doctor appointments which she needed. She speaks great English and is quite independent. Next week we plan to check her needs further and help with what we can.

Support provided to housed refugees (receipts posted in the Drop Box link https://www.dropbox.com/sh/fzasoeuko4hd82q/AAAzlup...):

Jaffar family metro: 62.50 EUR Myriam and Ali metro and necessities: 250 EUR (four months metro for both) + 50.82 EUR Kobra metro and necessities: 31.25 EUR+85.62 EUR Bassam: 105.72 EUR

Total cost: 587.91 EUR

Housing needs: We need volunteers to help look for housing and support refugees at shelters. If you would like to support us please contact us :-). People who do not receive benefits need the following: Metro tickets (single, weekly or monthly) Toiletries (shampoos, body washes, any necessities, etc.) Nappies for babies (a newborn and a two month old baby), a two year old girl and size 6 plus nappies

Thanks Sarah for the update on Myriam and family and Qamar and family! :-) Thanks Ivana, Mercedes, Sarah and Virginie for your support and dedication! :-)

NEW HOUSING: The family Mahmoud, whom we have helped house last year, had temporary accommodation until the end of this month so they were all very desperate to get a new place to move to; their only other option would have been to go back to a shelter. Their children are already enrolled in kindergarten and school and they are integrating well. Last week FlĂĽchtlinge Willkommen contacted us about a potential house for them. We met with the hosts and it went very well. Next month they are starting to slowly move in. Their current great hosts will assist them in getting furniture and necessary items and they will be visiting them regularly. They already got their benefits and are therefore quite independent. They were very pleased to get this new place. We will post a picture of them in their new house soon. For now we post a picture to remind you of them. :-)

We have recently also registered approximately 15 more new people from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan (including a family with three children, a couple, a lonely woman, a pregnant woman with a child, a musically talented boy, a pregnant woman with her family) who are staying at Vordere Zollamtsstrasse camp and Lindengasse camp. For these people, we were very lucky to get some generous volunteers to support them while they are in the camp. Even though volunteers and workers at camps are working hard 24/7 to make conditions for refugees as best as possible, understandably, they still find it hard to stay there. Therefore, we want to ease this at least by supporting them with needed donations, visiting them in hospitals (the case with the pregnant lady who was quite sick recently) by meeting with them or providing information about Vienna and so on. Thank you Sarah, Courtney, Monika, Sonia and Ivana for offering to support these people. :-)

We are making collections of donations for the refugees who need necessities through our group’s Facebook site https://www.facebook.com/groups/1649527115304656/.

If you would like to support our cause, please donate on this site or become our follower. For money donations, you can donate here, for material donations please send us a private message on this site (to Andrea Oterova or Alexander Kiselinchev): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1649527115304656/

Thank you to all the donors, hosts and volunteers, we really appreciate your generosity and support!!! Please keep it coming!!!:-)

HOUSING new people:

DECEMBER:

We keep registering people in need of housing mainly from Vordere ZollamtsstraĂźe and we keep looking for housing offers. We are now in touch with Diakonie as well and some private offers of housing are also becoming available. Johanna, a great lady from Diakonie has helped us find a home for Maysa and Robabeh in December, two young single female refugees from Vordere ZollamtsstraĂźe. Moreover, Diakonie is helping us with any necessary information regarding housing, which we have posted to the Mission of Hope Facebook group. Maysa is very private and prefers to stay anonymous, but we attach a picture of Robabeh in her new place:-).

JANUARY:

On Christmas Eve a beautiful baby boy Eleya, whose family (Myriam and Ali) from Iraq was staying at Vordere shelter, was born. As if given in the stars, Kerstin from FlĂĽchtlinge Willkommen was looking for a family to go into an available flat. In a week, the move was sorted, they met their hosts and we moved them on Monday the 18th of January. The flat is very cozy and they are all doing very well. We are also supporting them with their food, metro tickets, mobile credit and basic toiletries. We have given them 245 EUR that Sarah Scott, a great team member has collected for them and we still have an additional 90 EUR so far to give to them once these funds are spent. Thanks to our great donors, we have also collected a baby bed, clothes and toiletries for the family and they have all they need at the moment. We also got a 50 EUR DM voucher for baby items from another donor, which we will give to them this week. It will take time until they get their benefits so we still keep collecting material and financial donations for them. We will post the receipts once they spend the money. We attach a photo of the DM voucher.

Please help us support this family in their basic needs with one of these options:

- make a donation and add a note *Newborn baby family* and specify if you would like to give them cash, money for toiletries, food, metro tickets or mobile credit
- Buy a gift voucher from Hofer or DM or metro tickets - Give them food or donations of toiletries (they can pick up items anywhere in Vienna)

Thank you all for supporting us in our efforts for the refugees!

Keeping refugees in shelters warm, supporting school initiatives of Vordere ZollamtsstraĂźe, helping feed refugees at Primavesigasse shelter, assisting a Christmas event at LeyserstraĂźe shelter

VORDERE ZOLLAMTSSTRASSE

Thanks to the efforts of the great management and volunteers at this shelter, it has become a permanent shelter in December 2015. Moreover, they have put some showers in containers outside of the shelter so the hygienic conditions for the refugees have improved. Another very positive development was that 90 children from the shelter have started school in December.

The shelter had some problems with the heating so we raised funds to buy blankets. In addition, we have bought slippers for the children to take to their classes. Lastly, we have taken some furniture to the shelter for the Kindergarten area and the Mission of Hope volunteers have coordinated a delivery of furniture in the shelter, which was needed.

We also bought some toiletries since these are always needed. Bassam has helped us deliver it and a donor offered the van, thank you both:-).

Here is what we spent on the shelter using the donations raised through our site (all receipts are posted on a shared Dropbox page):

Blankets: 174.26 EUR

Slippers: 178.95 EUR

Toiletries: 107.55

TOTAL: 460.76 EUR + clothes and material donations

Current NEEDS of the shelter: Urgent need for hygiene products

PRIMAVESIGASSE

We have spent donations from the site on meat, fruits and vegetables and toiletries and clothes (receipts posted below): Roman, a volunteer from the shelter has helped us very much in delivering. Meat: 31.92 EUR Fruits and Vegetables: 64.24 EUR Toiletries: 62.90 EUR

TOTAL: 159.06 EUR+ donations of clothes and toys

CURRENT NEEDS of the shelter- currently around 160 people at this shelter (they always need food and toiletries so please help us raise funds to be able to buy these):

- tomatoes - cucumbers - red peppers - olives - carrots - Razors (for men)

LEYSERTRASSE

We have provided a donation for a Christmas celebration for young refugees at this Red Cross shelter. We have met the manager at an event she organized, where refugees and volunteers shared their experiences. We also listened to life music from a Syrian artist, it was very impressive. We thank them for inviting us. The money was used for a meal for young refugees at the shelter.

TOTAL: 100 EUR

Thank you all!!!
