Help refugees arriving in Lesbos

Update posted by Margaret Whitfield On Sep 03, 2015

As whims go, I think my upcoming trip to Lesbos really takes the biscuit. I made the decision a few weeks ago, shortly after having a rant around the kitchen table, after more than a few glasses of wine, about the disgraceful language used about refugees in the UK media, people who were fleeing death and destruction. The lack of political leadership here in England made me utterly ashamed, as did so many of the comments people were making on social media, from the warmth and safety of their homes. So I decided that I would just go and try and do something about it. I googled, I researched, I looked on Air bnb, checked flights and realised that it would be easy for me to put my money (and time) where my mouth is. I thought if I could raise 600 to go out with, I'd be really lucky.

How things change ... a mere two weeks after this campaign went live, the plight of refugees is all over our media, and rightly so. David Cameron is still demonstrating that as well as having the face of a painted egg, he also has a heart of stone because there are too many votes to be gained from the anti-immigration crowd by showing some humanity.

I firmly believe that we have the power to sidestep politicians and their refusal to act and hopefully this campaign, others like it, petitions and sympathetic news stories can change this situation.

So I want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has donated, shared and sent me beautiful messages of support. I have been profoundly moved by friends, family and amazingly, complete strangers, who have all given money to help support desperate people, in the face of willful scaremongering in the British press. You have really restored my faith in humanity. I can't believe I have raised over 3,200 and there are still nine days to go. Everything I'm raising will go to buy shoes, clothes, food, sleeping bags, shelter and will ensure that the refugees who arrive safely in Lesbos (and so many, sadly, do not) will be welcomed to Europe with the kindness they deserve.

You rock!

Hey everyone, it’s Peggy again ... I can’t figure out how to add a new update! So I will write it in a comment instead. So life is pretty crazy here in Lesbos. The scale of what is happening is just immense. The whole of the coast facing Turkey is littered with dinghies, life jackets and wet clothes. Several boatloads of people arrive every single day. Whilst they are fed and given water, many are sleeping on the street here as there is no permanent shelter for them and nowhere to wash themselves or cook. I’ve been getting in touch with a few projects here so I can work out best how to distribute the money that I have raised. I want to make sure that it’s going to be spent in the best way possible. I feel very humbled about how much I have been given and I want to distribute it with thought and care. Anyway, so the charity Borderline is opening a kind of way station here in a week or so. This is outside of Molyvos but is somewhere where the refugees can rest, wa
