My name is Jill Samukimba. I am a Ph.D. candidate in Sociology at the University of Cape Town. Since my masters, I have been researching African fathers' involvement in their children's lives and as such, work closely with African fathers who participate in my research. This has afforded me the opportunity to maintain close relations with the fathers and partake in their fathering journeys. I am organizing this fundraiser on behalf of one of my research participants, Tsietsi, and his partner, Khanyi whose house was burnt down last week Saturday 3 October 2020. Below is the story from Tsietsi:

We are pleading for assistance as we have been visited by a heart breaking unfortunate event that we don't wish for anyone. We are a couple in our mid-30's that have lived for years in Khayelitsha area, Makhaza section. Khanyi received a call around 2 am on Saturday from a neighbor informing her of the inferno that has engulfed our humble abode. She immediately woke up her sister to accompany her to the scene. When they got there, the members of the community had already extinguished the fire, unfortunately, the structure had already crumbled to the ground. Fortunately, the community managed to save a few items in the process of trying to extinguish the fire. The items that were salvaged are refrigerator, stove and microwave. Other items were missing whilst the remnants had been charred beyond identification. We are beginning to believe that this might have been a case of a break-in followed by arson as an attempt to conceal the identity of the perpetrators. Nonetheless, we grateful that our lives were spared as we both were not home when the incident took place: we were at her (Khanyi) mother's place and that's where we slept. As a result of the incident, we are left with nothing but only what we had on; everything else from identity documentation to house appliances, etc.was destroyed. What makes things worse is that we are expecting a child in the next coming months. Whom we were certain that she will come into a home, but all that has been shattered. We are praying that by the day she comes - there will be a shelter over our heads.

I am pleading with well-wishers to help me rebuild Tsietsi's home as soon as yesterday. No donation is too small and because he has lost everything non-monetary donations like clothes, food, home appliances etc. are also very much welcome. Tsietsi is a father of one (6 years) and is expecting his second born in a few months time. Any donations towards the children will go a long way in helping particularly his expecting partner, Khanyi will be deeply appreciated.
