Campaign Story
Renowned South African potter Andrew Walford and his wife Leanda Walford lost their home of more than 50 years in a devastating fire on the evening of 11 July 2022. The fire completely gutted their entire home, destroying all their possessions in the process. They were fortunate to escape with their lives and the clothes on their backs.
While their two vehicles are insured, their home and its contents were unfortunately not insured. Due to a combination of factors, including the Covid pandemic, cost and an unpleasant experience with their previous insurer, they were between insurers for their home when the fire took place. As a result, they have lost everything.
Andrew and Leanda have used the pottery business they built together to empower the Shongweni community by assisting local women and artists to earn a living from their craft. Their home played an integral part in this endeavour, as it served as a venue for many an open day for both Andrew Walford pottery and the artists in the local community .
The goal of this Go Fund Me is to try to raise the money needed to rebuild their home to the extent that it can once again be used as a venue for the open days for the community artists and craftspeople they support as well as for Andrew’s pottery.
Any assistance, no matter how big or small towards this goal would be greatly appreciated.

The Aftermath. The Clean up. The Blessings
Update posted by Andrew Walford at 07:59 am
It has been an overwhelming week for Andrew and Leanda. The last week has been spent contemplating the way forward, at least doing so in the quiet moments between battling flare-ups caused by hotspots and piles of smoldering thatch in and around the ruins that was once their home. The. . . . .

I'm so sorry to read about this. I just gave a beautiful set of cups and jar to a friend who was delighted, and I went to show her the website and read this sad news. My thoughts and prayers with you. I hope you are safe and well, and that something wonderful comes from this firing.

I love having many of your creative works in my own house and was so very sorry to hear about the fire. I wish you and Leanda fast progress in re-establishing your own home and its important links to the local and further flung communities of artists that have benefitted from your expertise and humanity all these years. Go well!
