Help us in raising funds for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) workers whose livelihoods are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Your donations will help us provide additional assistance for basic necessities including food and medicine to the PWDs and their families.
Our story - How we started
Persons with disabilities are among the vulnerable and underserved groups in the world that need the utmost attention from the government. Particularly in the Philippines, despite the laws that protect their rights, PWDs are still marginalized and discriminated, and their potentials remain untapped.
Immersing in New Corella, Davao Del Norte, one of the 30 poorest municipalities in the Philippines, I’ve seen the struggle of PWDs finding jobs and opportunities which left me a realization:
It’s not poverty that kills their dreams, but it’s the lack of opportunities available for them.
The unemployment rate among PWDs in New Corella is a pressing issue. Out of 931 PWDs here, only 4% have jobs that aren’t a regular job. However, many of these PWDs are actively seeking for job opportunities, but because of the social stigma that they are facing, they are often rejected.
Although most of the PWDs here worked as a farmer - in a land that they don’t own - earning a meager income of 12 USD – 30 USD a month. With a family of 5 or more, this income wouldn’t be enough. That’s why most of them look for other side jobs to make ends meet.
I’ve seen how hardworking they are, but because of the lack of opportunities, no matter how much they strive, their earnings wouldn’t be enough to give them a quality kind of life.
A social project was born
With this, together with my two fellow youth leaders – one of them is a PWD who also suffered from social stigma and discrimination, we worked hand-in-hand to establish a social project that creates a positive impact to the PWD community.
Green Rubber Footwear project aims to improve the quality of life of Persons with Disabilities through economic empowerment and capacity building in New Corella, Davao Del Norte.
We believe that with the right support, Persons with Disabilities can!
