TL;DR

My wife, Railyn Del-Rosario-Chu is diagnosed with 2 Cancers (Aggressive) - Endometrial Cancer Stage 1 and Breast Cancer Stage 2A. She is in need of financial aid for 18 cycles of treatment, with a 3-week interval in between cycles. Each cycle is estimated to cost a minimum of PhP150,000, which totals to PhP2,700,000. Note that this may still change after the total hysterectomy procedure on Feb 4, 2023. However, given the urgency and short intervals of the treatment cycles, we need to start raising the funds now. Rest assured that we will continually provide updates as soon as we are able.

*****

My wife, Railyn Del Rosario-Chu (38 years old) and I, lost our 1st baby due to ectopic pregnancy in 2017. We were advised to wait for at least 1-2 yrs to try again. She had her initial check-up again around October of 2017 at a clinic in Quezon City. The OB-Gyne detected a small cyst in her ovary but was not considered suspicious. We were advised to go to a bigger hospital to have her fallopian tubes checked and have a procedure called hysterosalpingogram or tubal flush. The objective is to look for a possible reason for her ectopic pregnancy. Unfortunately, Covid-19 pandemic happened and following the advice of our doctor, we decided to defer the procedure to avoid getting infected.

However, in February 2021 her menstruation had barely stopped. There would only be a 4-5 days interval before she would have blood discharge again. At that time, we were worried but not too alarmed since there were no other symptoms.

In September 2022, we decided to have our work-up done to try again for another baby. The OB-Gyne wanted to have her go through pap smear and tubal flush, but when she found out about her continuous bleeding, she was scheduled for a laboratory and transvaginal ultrasound. The ultrasound showed that she had thickened endometrium and was advised to have D&C. The OB-Gyne performed D&C Sept 19 and a specimen was sent to pathology that resulted in devastating news of Figo Grade 1 Endometrioid Carcinoma (Endometrial Cancer).

After the initial shock of the results, we informed her of a cyst that my wife noticed on her right breast. She was given an order for a Mammogram and Breast ultrasound. It resulted to Birads category 4B : Moderate suspicion of malignancy. We were then referred to a breast surgeon, who checked and performed Lumpectomy on her right breast because the cyst is near the ribs, which is not safe for a needle biopsy. After the biopsy, it resulted in another earth-shattering news of Grade II : Comedocarcinoma & Cribriform Patterns and HER2 Positive (Breast Cancer). HER2 is a protein that helps breast cancer cells grow quickly. Breast cancer cells with higher than normal levels of HER2 are called HER2-positive. These cancers tend to grow and spread faster than breast cancers that are HER2-negative. Hence, her cancer was considered an aggressive type, together with the factor of her age that resulted in a Modified Radical Mastectomy : Right Breast, which was performed on Nov 12, 2022.

When we went back to the OB-Gyne, we were then advised to do a total hysterectomy due to the aggressive nature of the cancer cells. The surgery will be performed this Feb 4, 2023 and then she will only have a 3-4 weeks recovery period before the start of her 1st treatment. Tentatively, the treatment plan is 18 cycles of radiation, chemotherapy and targeted therapy, with 3-week interval between cycles. Per estimate, each cycle will cost a minimum of PhP150,000, which will bring the total to PhP2,700,000. However, this may still change after the total hysterectomy procedure (after which, we will provide updates). In addition to raising the money for the treatment, we were also advised to prepare a separate fund for any emergency confinement that we may encounter along the way. The treatment is no easy process and each medicine would have its own side-effect that can send her to a hospital confinement.

As she has to focus on her surgeries and treatment, our only source of income at this time are my employment and our small business. We can still cover the cost of her second operation and 2 cycles of treatment, but after that we are in dire need of funding. Basically, we will need PhP150,000 every 3 weeks, which is impossible to raise on our own.

My wife and I have only been married for 2 years. Our life together has just started and we are looking forward to spending more years together. We are very optimistic that we will survive this trial with your generosity, kindness and prayers. Hopefully with God’s grace, we will also have the opportunity in the future to give back to others as you did to us.

Any amount you are willing to share with us will go a long way to help Railyn fight her cancers.
