We all know what is happening in Syria; we watch videos, share links, read news. But do we really understand how difficult living there is ? What people feel when they wake up every morning and fear about their own lives or the lives of loved ones ? Many of us, luckily, have never experienced that, and it is really hard to imagine.

A friend of mine, Rafah, is not so lucky. She is currently studying English Literature in Tishreen University, Syria, where she will soon graduate. When the war started, she was only 15. She insisted on continuing her studies although it was dangerous to go to school and university, but she evaluated her education to be more important than her safety. Now she really hopes to move abroad after graduation and start a new life, where she can continue her studies and have a normal and safe existence away from the dangers and atrocities. She works as an English teacher for beginners in Syria to pay her university fees. But the economic situation has worsened dramatically because of the ongoing war, and moving abroad is still out of reach for her, as salaries there are very low compared to those in other countries.

I have known her for some time now. She does her best to succeed in her studies, and she is also a very good girl. The goal of this campaign is to raise money that could allow her to apply for a university course in some suitable country, and be used to move there and as a proof of funds for a visa application. She will start to work while studying in order to continue paying her fees, as soon as she is settled there. I will send every single penny received by Gogetfunding website to her (even if we do not reach the target, they are surely worth more for her than for us; what we use for just some cups of coffee can help her family for days). Feel free to write me a message if you want more information.

If you think she deserves a better life, please give her a hand. We would really appreciate it.

UPDATE - Following the advice of a friend of mine, it is good to specify what the plan is, should the campaign work. Rafah will enrol for a master in a university in Canada. To obtain a student visa, she has to provide a proof of funds. This means having a good amount of money in a (possibly Canadian) bank account. There are banks that allow foreigners to open accounts before moving to the country, and she will choose one of them to start the procedure. With a student visa, she will be able to go to Lebanon and, from there, fly to Canada.

UPDATE - I will double all the donations by myself (old and new ones). So at the end of the campaign I will send Rafah twice the amount we have received.

  • It's just a drop in the bucket and I wish I could do more or help more people, but hopefully it's another step closer to her goal. Cheers, Keto
