Campaign Story
From: Annie Windell
Dear Friends,
I've just found out that a close friend of mine, Rae van Nieuwenhuizen, has been diagnosed with a deadly form of cervical cancer - Rae has been a nurse in our community for the last 30 years and has dedicated her life to helping others. She has spent years being on the front line- helping on the road in horrible traffic accidents as a paramedic and stabilising patients in casualty.............she quite probably has been the one to attend to one of your family members when they were in trouble......She is now the one in need of help.........We all know that our nurses salaries are low, and Rae is not able to afford medical aid. She is trying to find her way through our govt hospital system - she desperately needs surgery by a specialised doctor trained in both oncology and gynaecology as her case is complicated........The waiting list is long and they can only see her for surgery at Albert Luthuli in Feb next year - this cancer is so aggressive that by Feb next year - it will be too late.......it will have progressed to Stage 4........by then, it will be terminal and nothing can be done. She has 3months........I'm humbly asking that the community in which she has served, could rally around her and help her to raise the funds needed to pay a surgeon upfront to save her life. I worked as part of the team who supported Survivor X, our little rape victim, so I know what an incredible loving community you are. Can we rally around this amazing lady and help to fund her surgery?
Anyone who feels moved to help - here are the account details - if she can even raise some money upfront to pay cash, the surgeon may agree to help her....if each one of us only donated R50, it would only take 1600 of us to raise the full R80 000 she needs for the surgery.

Rae was part of the team that helped my get through a very bad case of dehydration and heat stroke during a 9-day mountain biking event. I hope in some small way I can help in return with what is a whole much tougher setback.
