Campaign Story
The Gurune Community Radio 99.3 FM covers over 1000 communities in the Upper East Region of Ghana, broadcasting in the main major languages (Gurune, Nabdam, Talin, Nankane, respectively). The radio station is based out of Bukere, Bolgatanga. Our main focus broadcast is targeting the youth, women, and the larger community.
Currently, we are engaging 12 community youth groups in promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reflecting this in their community's situation. Each youth group selects which of the 17 SDGs reflect their social issues that will help them in their community development advocacy. This project trains youth ages 15-25 in broadcast skills and social media, which they will use for community development and outreach. Also, our 25 broadcast volunteers also get training in behavior communication skills, to further develop radio programs on nutrition, maternal child health, family planning and the vaccination of pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers.
Over the years, because of climate change, farming has collapsed, resulting in food insecurity. Now families cannot afford three square meals a day, which would cost about one US Dollar. And with the current inflation crisis, which has hit Ghana especially hard, being able to afford this amount has become very difficult.
Having spent 15 years in a rented property, the station was forced to relocate to its new owned building after rent prices were increased to unrealistic prices (with the price of the rent costing more buying a new transmitter!) Now we are ready to set up the radio tower, move in to the new location, and return to air. But the cost of setting up the tower and refurbishing the interior (technology, electronics, security) is very expensive and beyond our financial capacity. This is why we are reaching out to friends and supporters to help us overcome this final obstacle.

Thanks to the generosity of people around the world, we have reached our first goal of raising $1000 and have used the funds to begin the installation of the 50-meter tower and the refurbishment of the new studio, fixing a new security gate, and setting up a much-needed water tank.There. . . . .

I jived in Bolgatanga from 1984 to 1986 and worked on the GWSC hand pump program. Am delighted to see the radio program about to resume. Some of you may remember my late wife Frieda Peters.
