Jay, PJ, Peej, Kuya PJ, Tito PJ, Tito big tummy. Kuya PJ was very outgoing and very talkative when with family, relatives and friends. He always have stories to tell. He was sweet and masungit at the same time, especially to those close to him. He always tried to do well in school and even completed his MBA a few years ago. He has his own dreams and aspirations but they were seemingly cut short early last year.

It was around last week of Jan 2020 that our family would have a dinner out, had coffee for more stories and went home. It seems all was okay. Kuya woke up in the middle of the night and stood up to visit the bathroom. On his way back to his bed, he suddenly passed out and fell on his face. Those who were at home with him heard the loud thud and went to help him. We thought it was his diabetes that caused him to collapse. He was brought to the emergency room and was confined for a week. He was being makulit with the nurses to give him updates on his diagnosis and results, and was already being impatient 🙂 as he already wanted to return to work. Our late Tito (an oncology surgeon but was also like a family doctor to us, his relatives) found something odd though with his symptoms and lab results. Kuya had a biopsy and it was stage 3 gastroesophageal (esophagus) cancer.

Kuya had to be scheduled right away by mid-February for surgery to remove part of his esophagus and stomach covered with cancer cells. He was confined for a month for pre-surgery prep until recovery. He was supposed to have his chemo a few weeks after when the pandemic hit. He was able to start his chemo around June 2020 until Dec 2020. He enjoyed being back in the work force (at home) mid last year as a Integrated Asset Management Officer until his condition forced him to retire at the end November as he would need to focus on his health and recovery. He was responding to the chemo sessions and all of us were really looking forward that he can already start his journey back to health. After his PET scan and ultrasound screening, cancer cells near the esophagus was gone but additional ones were found to get into his pancreas. He needed another surgery to remove this mass and this was scheduled last February 2021.

He had his surgery where more than 75% of his pancreas was removed and his stomach is now about 15% of what it used to be. After about 1-2 weeks of recovery, he had a month of almost daily radiation. Shortly after, he started chemo sessions again. With the effects of the radiation, previous treatments and limited food intake, he had to start being admitted at the hospital for by his 2nd chemo session. He has now completed 4 treatments and would need at least 4 more chemo. We even needed some blood donors (platelets and RBC) for his chemo sessions to proceed.

We are grateful that he still had health insurance coverage from his company last year and we have generous family, relatives and friends, who supported us with love, prayers and even financially to cover for hospital bills, doctors fees, radiation and chemo treatments. We appeal to your kind hearts to help Kuya PJ both in prayers and support the remaining medical cost and other related expenses.
