Hi everyone. As mostly everyone knows, my two dachshunds are my life, and in my family, dogs are our everything. They are the biggest joy and make every day better.
On Saturday, my perfectly healthy and young 2 1/2 miniature dachshund showed signs of heavy breathing and fast heart rate, where we immediately took her to the animal emergency. They were too short staffed to see us, and ultimately told us she looked fine and didn’t seem to be in distress, to take her home.
I noticed that night that she was twitching in her sleep, but didn’t think too much of it. At around 5am on Sunday, I woke up to find Phoebe wobbling and unable to keep balance.
I rushed her to a different animal emergency where she was diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease, and the cause unknown. She was sent home with pain medication and I was told to go to my primary vet today (Monday).
I noticed Phe regressing and knew she could not wait. I found a third emergency vet, and she was taken in by them. She is currently paraplegic and cannot hold her urine or bowels.
Phoebe is awaiting surgery today, where she has a 50-70% chance of regaining mobility. She has lost sensation in her left leg, but her right leg is still in tact.
This has been one of the hardest thing my family has ever been through, and it is extremely
costly. We had no idea this could happen to such a young, healthy dog, and now we are in a tough position trying to pay all of her necessary medical expenses to take her out of pain. Phoebe’s bills have reached over 10,000 dollars as of today.
I have been debating doing this, but this has ripped my heart out, and although I am thankful I have been able to pay for most of the expenses, I could use some support to continue to do so and ensure she can have the best chance at a normal life again.
She is so happy, fun, and sassy, and deserves to walk or run again. As all animals do. If you can donate, that would be amazing, but if you cannot, that is 100% okay. I figured I would take a chance because we are blessed with such amazing family and friends. Thank you
Leeanna and Phoebe
