In June, 2015, Phoebe Afayo, a 6-year-old little girl, started developing headaches and was often tired from her few hours of school. When her mom took her to the newly constructed health center in her home district, tests revealed she’s suffering from Wilm’s tumor.

Her single mom was understandably devastated, not just by the news of her only child’s serious condition, but also by the fact there was very little she could do to help her.

Brendah, was at the time, on a volunteering trip to Buliisa in Uganda when she met Phoebe and her mom. Interacting with Phoebe over many successive evening and weekend visits to her home, Brenda would quickly realize what a smart, kind, sociable and incredibly gifted little girl Phoebe is.

Once Brenda learned that there were neither the facilities, the funds nor the expertise to perform the kind of neurosurgery and chemotherapy that would save Phoebe’s life in Uganda or anywhere in Eastern Africa, she hurriedly organized a hike to Mount Rwenzori, one of Africa’s highest peaks, hoping to raise at least part of the required $7,600 for an urgent operation in India’s Narayana Hrudayalaya Hospital, where she has negotiated heavily subsidized admission and surgery fees.

The Rwenzori Hike raised an impressive $1,472, which is sufficient to cover return tickets for Phoebe and one caregiver, her mom, to India for the surgery. Wilm’s tumor is a very serious and aggressive cancer, but once treated in its early stages, chances of survival are reasonably high.

Phoebe was diagnosed with stage II of the disease, and her treatment will include a combination of chemotherapy and surgery on both her kidneys to remove the tumors. Brenda, Phoebe and her entire family are counting on generous people like you to raise the remaining $6,128 to give her a chance at survival and living a normal life.

Phoebe was diagnosed with two other less serious conditions for which another fundraiser has been able to give her the treatment she needs. She is currently recuperating at her home in Buliisa, Uganda.

This December, despite writing her year-end primary school exams on a hospital bed, her report card indicates she emerged 18th out of 106 students in her class! Phoebe says she wants to be a midwife like her mom when she grows up. Let’s give her a chance to continue excelling and to live her dream.

Brenda is organizing a second hike to Mount Rwenzori to give her own family, friends and well-wishers from all over the world an opportunity to participate in saving Phoebe’s life.

Recurring donation opportunities also exist to keep Phoebe in school, since initial treatments and doctor appointments have literally wiped out her single mom's life savings. Phoebe's mom works for a small nonprofit maternity clinic in rural Uganda.
