Campaign Story
Hi friends and family!

We also wanted to add, that if you etransfer directly if bypasses the fees associated with using this platform, so we encourage you to email Tad.
(Please note, if you prefer contact Tad or Lorna to donate in person as well, please email [email protected] or give us a call)
As many of you know, and some may now just be discovering, a few years ago Paul's left leg began to go numb and eventually lost all feeling. He had to walk with a cane, and was also experiencing lower back pain. He did all he could with our medical system here in Canada, including a specialized operation, the goal of which was to un-impinge the nerve. Although it provided him some relief, it was ultimately unsuccessful in treating the condition. It also took many months to happen while things continued to get worse.
He was aware of the capacity of the brain to create new neural pathways (neuroplasticity) and did manage to teach himself to walk again , however unsteadily, thus avoiding using a walker or wheelchair as well as exploring many of the functional medicine treatments here in Canada.
Last summer, he ended up immobilized by a new pain in his lower back as well as numbness beginning to show in his right (other) leg. This turned out to be disc degeneration in his lower back, amongst other issues.
Although we are so grateful for the amazing medical system we have here in Canada, they just don't seem to be able to do anyting meaningful, or regenerative about it. Of the limited options they do have, all include long waiting lists and very small chances of success.
It's been almost a year now since we tried to get further help, and Paul was still waiting to hear back from the Doctor about getting on the list for a new MRI so they could update and diagnose things again. We decided that we needed to seek out alternatives and take things into out own hands.
Paul recently discovered a new lease on life down in Melaque, Mexico. Beyond meeting wonderful new people, spending time with some of the snow birds who go down there every year from up this way,he has felt rejuvenated by the sun, outdoor swimming and ease of access to amenities. All this has really helped him manage and deal with the pain and immobilization and his mobility is improving again.
Now down to why we are asking for donations.
We have found 2 regenerative medicine therapies, with strong track records for success that we think hold the most potential for managing the pain, and even reversing some of the damage are: Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections and Stem Cell Therapy (SCT). Both available close to Melaque from a well loved and reputable local Doctor, Dr. Alonso Vequero.
He was incredibly helpful and gave Paul hope that he hasn’t had in a long time. From driving out to meet him so he did’t get lost finding the clinic, to phone support and clearly explaining the pros and cons of the treatments. He has been in practice for a long time and has people traveling from all over the world to see him to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries including lupus, cancer, heart disease, arthritis and spine issues.
Beyond a very warm and helpful consultation, Paul was able to get an MRI right away and have an up to date diagnosis of his back and legs. To say that it's been anything short of miraculous would be an understatement. After many years of having to push and fight for help here in Canada in a matter of days he was able to line up and get help down in Mexico.
Canada recently chose to ban SCT (there was a great clinic in Vancouver up until last year). And although PRP is available in Canada, it is the least promising of he 2, and the cost is close to what both treatments combined will be down there.
We have done thorough research and believe the treatments to be both ethical and to have a very high probability of success with very limited chance of side effects.
At this point, we aren't worried about it not working, we are focused on solutions that will help Paul become mobile and pain free again so he can embrace and enjoy life as it's meant to be, with love, family, friends and joy.
We are hoping to reach Paul’s family and friends to see if you can help cover the costs of the procedure. Although extremely affordable, it will still run $4200 plus travel expenses and other incidentals (it’s not in the town Paul is already staying in, Melaque).
We will accept any and all donations, but have also put together 3 donation options that are sure to tickle your heartstrings.
Paul has always been an artist at heart and is excited to be able to give something back in return.
This will of course be combined with other changes in lifestyle, health regimes and support as well. But it’s the most expensive piece, and the one we could really use financial help with.
He is looking forward to hopefully being able to lift his grandkids again, long walks with family, playing music without having to sit down! And the simpler things like walking up stairs without discomfort.
Thank you for reading this, and we hope you feel inspired to donate!
