Are you a friend of the Lower Zambezi National Park and have experienced the magic of being with a breeding herd of elephants?
Or are you a new adventurer that was planning on travelling to the Lower Zambezi this year to discover its uniqueness and watch the sun set on the Zambezi River drenching the entire valley with unimaginable colours?
Have you had to postpone your trip this year due to a world-wide pandemic?
If you find yourself saying “yes” to those answers, then we are asking you to help us keep going to ensure that this vital and incredible landscape will still be here for you for when you are able to visit.
Conservation Lower Zambezi (CLZ) is an NGO that has been operating in the area for over 25 years, working with the local Parks Authority – the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) to protect the wildlife and integrity of the Lower Zambezi. Through extensive and innovative programmes, we have been able to significantly reduce poaching, improve job security for local community members and educate local youths on protecting their environment.
In light of the COVID-19 situation, the Lower Zambezi is at risk, with both the people and the animal inhabitants being severely affected. This season, due to the global restrictions on travel, many safari operators will not open or will operate at a minimum level due to postponements and cancellations.
Tourism in the Lower Zambezi provides critical job opportunities for local communities and has always been a vital contributor to CLZ’s core operating costs and salaries. While tourism takes a massive hit this year, the resulting consequences come down hardest on the local staff that no longer have jobs and therefore no income and will likely result in an increase in poaching for subsistence. This, we fear, may also endanger elephants, wild dog, lion and many other iconic animals that we are fighting tirelessly to protect.
CLZ is also facing challenges with income to retain staff and we are imploring you to please help us bridge the worrying gap in our budget which may threaten our very existence. Help us ensure that we can continue to retain and support our staff, the local community and the wildlife in these troubling times.
If you were going to visit the Lower Zambezi and have postponed or cancelled your trip, please consider donating the money that you were going to spend on insect repellent, sun cream, walking boots and other safari accessories to help us make sure that we and the wildlife in the Lower Zambezi will still be a thriving landscape for you to visit in the future.
