Help Our Colleague David A. Hill

Update posted by Gavin Dudeney On Oct 23, 2017

It's with a heavy heart that I write that David died early morning today, in the company of his closest family, after a long and heard-fought battle against illness that had finally left him without voice last Wednesday.

Those of you who contributed here on the website went a long way towards ensuring that his last few months were at least more financially comfortable and stable, and I'd like to thank you all on behalf of Ildikó and Angelika for all you did for him. As they move forward into a difficult and unpredictable future, our thoughts will, I'm sure, be with them.

I will be leaving this fund open for the next few days, until just after David's funeral, at which point I will transfer all remaining funds to the family. If you - or anyone you know, and who knew David - would like to contribute before it finishes, please do so as soon as you can.

For my part I'd also like to thank you all - we work in an incredibly caring profession and this, along with many other crowd acts of kindness over the years, continues to make me proud of the kind of people we are. We all know that some day we'll need people, and I, for one, am glad we're all here.

I’m very, very sad to hear this. I’ve been in contact with David for 10 years. First face to face at NILE in Norwich for 5 summers and on one occasion here in Buenos Aires when he played and sang with my husband’s band on our humble terrace at home. Then through emails where I followed his travels, his conferences and later his long hard fight with this cruel disease that has finally taken him. I have always admired his knowledge, his joy of living, that loud, rambunctious laugh, his wit and his wonderful creative talents. I honour his work here and offer my deepest condolences to Ildiko and Angelika who I never met but whom our son met and told me all about them. The world will be a poorer place without the majestic David Hill.

Sad news. I only worked with David a couple of summmers at Bell Teacher Campus, but we shared a love of art nouveau and fruit tea. I remember him laughing his head off when I told him that my angling other half never brings his catches home, as we hate fish; that really tickled him. We learned a lot about moths from David and he had a knack of recalling details about you from one year to the next. Clare, Bell Cambridge

Sad to hear. We had the honer to have him as a guest speaker during our Autumn ’16 events in Greece. Just over a year ago he was inspiring teachers in Greece. Our warmest condolences to his wife and daughter.

I am so sorry to hear this sad news. David was a good friend, and an intensely imaginative and creative person. He showed such courage and independence during his illness. I had known him for thirty-five years, since we taught together in Kosovo. My deepest condolences to Ildiko and Angelika. Please keep me in touch with plans to commemorate David. John Hodgson

Dear All,

Just to let you know that - in agreement with David - I have just transferred out the funds raised so far, to David's bank account; and to say thank you once again (on behalf of me, David and all his family) for the amazing work you've all done here. David had thought this campaign might raise £1,000, so the result has been rather stunning for everyone involved. Thank you all so very, very much.

When I get a health update from David, I'll be sure to let you all know.

A Happy easter (or holiday weekend, or whatever you celebrate where you live!) to all of you.

Best,

Gavin

Thanks for the update, Gavin. It’s great that, together, we’ve been able to help David and familiy in their hour of need. All best-Sue

Well, it was an amazing weekend and this fundraiser has surpassed all hopes and dreams - but please don't let that deter you from donating if you've just found it! David contacted me yesterday and asked me to thank each and every one of you who has donated, so please consider that done. I have now sorted out the paperwork at this end, and can start getting some of this money over to David in Hungary, so that he can put it to the use for which it was always intended.

If you haven't already, please spread the word.

Many thanks,

Gavin

Brilliant, Gavin! It’s been an amazing response. I hope that David will now be able to stop worrying about immediate future practicalities and concentrate on getting well again. Best, Dave

It's been a bit of a hectic twenty-four hours, but I just wanted to check back into the page and let you know that the response from our teaching community has been absolutely splendid, and far beyond anything David could have hoped for when he contacted me yesterday. I know he'll be along here to thank you at some point, but I just wanted to say how immensely touched I am at how you've all responded, and how lovely it must be for David to see just how many people have been moved to take part in this. Please spread the word and keep the help coming. Have great weekends.

Gavin
