What a pandemic means for stray cats and dogs
COVID-19 has affected both people and animals alike around the world. As lock down and physical distancing measures are enacted, more people are staying home, while restaurants and most markets are closed – both vital food sources for stray animals! The effect on stray animals is devastating as most are finding it increasingly difficult to find food.
Whilst food isn’t the only struggle strays face in Southeast Asia, with the economic situation worsening, the theft of dogs and cats for the brutal meat trade is becoming more rampant.
The intake of animals abandoned at shelters is also increasing day by day, either with the mistaken belief that animals can pass on COVID-19, or that the virus has left owners unable to care for them.
These challenging times call for urgent measures. We are giving dogs and cats a lifeline, by feeding stray animals wherever possible, campaigning to end the dog and cat meat trade and addressing the challenging situations faced by local shelters.
Why am I fundraising?
For ten years I have been feeding and rescuing dogs and cats on the streets, everything paid from my own money.
I would like to raise funds in order to help more animals in need.
What do I plan to do with the funds?
Feed 20 stray dogs every day (possibly more) and get them medical help as and when required.
1. How do I know this is legit?
A. I have been working with animals in India since 2010. My work with stray dogs has been reported in news. I also run a dog shelter. To me, this is a passion.
2. Why do you need this money?
A. For ten years, I have fed stray dogs every day (during holidays, I hire help for feeding) and this entire effort has been self-funded. I have also sterilized and vaccinated these dogs. This puts a significant strain on my finances.
3. What specific costs will my contribution cover?
A. My monthly expense for feeding 20 stray dogs is approximately Rs. 10,000. I cook a meal consisting of rice, chicken, and Pedigree dog food (one meal a day). This, plus the fuel expenses come to Rs. 320 a day. While traveling, I hire help for feeding and pay them, depending upon the duration of the exercise. The money raised will go entirely towards covering these costs.
4. Will you be keeping any money as a fee for your efforts?
A. No. I have a job that pays my bills. Feeding stray dogs is something I do out of my love for animals.
