Help Needed For Educating English For Children In India

India graduates millions every year, but too few are fit to hire. (Wall Street Journal)

The social challenge we focus on is to deliver transformative employment and life skills to urban youth.

The outcome goals of the Freedom English Academy project are:

a) Build competence in oral communication through intensive English language learning
b) Develop critical thinking skills to reason, analyze and solve problems
c) Become self-reliant, self-confident and build positive habits of the mind
d) Foster a sense of community – equipped with practical strategies for contributing to the greater good

We operate free of cost, coaching centers within a 100-mile radius of our New Delhi Head Office. Six days a week students attend a one hour forty five minute class, for the program duration of 52 weeks. The class size is limited to 20 students.

We use a hybrid of computer based training, teachers, workbooks, peer and game based learning techniques. A cloud-based learning management system tracks each student’s progress.

We collaborate with academia and others in the following areas:

1) Add to the critical thinking skills building content in our workbooks
2) Improve our testing tools to make them comparable to TOEIC / TOEFL standards
3) Develop strategies to scale up the project to serve one hundred thousand students per year
4) Develop retention / engagement strategies to bring daily attendance rates to 80% plus
5) Review and critique our teaching staff training modules
6) Explore and test innovative mass teaching / learning ideas such as sub-titled music videos, etc.
