A transplant is needed to save my best friend's dad. But we can’t afford it.
As I am writing this message, Kris' dad is in the operation room waiting for one of his legs to be amputated. When he wakes up in pain, his life and that of his family, will never be the same.

Kristian Mongis is currently working for a BPO. His Mom, Ms. Emerlita Mongis works for a Sameson Funeral Home - a funeral parlor. They are the sole financial providers for a family of 5 members since Mr. Nonilo Mongis, Kris' daddy, was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease (kidney failure) due to diabetes complications 8 months ago.

Government Assistance is Not Enough

As you may already know, the battle against the end-stage renal disease through the dialyzer is not only physically draining, emotionally painful but is also extremely costly for common people living in a third-world country (the Philippines) like Kris' and his family. Although the government has been continuously extend benefits for citizens who have to go under dialysis as treatment for kidney failure, those benefits are far from being enough. Only up to 98 sessions/person are covered a year while the typical patient would need 159 sessions/year. Literally, the patient has to take the procedures 3 times per week, every week and for the rest of his life...to stay alive. In addition, the benefits do not extend to cost of medicines, transportation to the dialysis center and the treatment of many complications of dialysis, such as infections treatment, tests and hospitalization.

Living in Pain

Since his first dialysis session, Mr. Nonilo has never been able to enjoy his life. He is not allowed to drink more than 1 liter of water a day...even when he is thirsty (the kidney no longer functions so the water will go to other places including the heart, placing risk of heart failure), he would need assistance and care from family members for almost every daily activity and he would normally feel fatigue all day every day, which causes him to sleep a lot. He would get infections every now and then after a tiring dialysis session, which would give him fever, chills and make him vomit sometimes.

Kris used to tell me how he missed taking his dad out to church on Sunday and they would talk a lot. Now we mostly just watch him sleep. Kris said he missed seeing him happy and laughing. When all of this first began, he also got very quiet and vented out to me how scared he is about his own future and the life ahead of his family. He didn't know if they would overcome this financial challenge of a lifetime.

Losing a Leg

3 weeks ago, Kris' dad had to be hospitalized (after Father's day as I remember) due to an infection on his left foot. The Internal medicine doctor advised that the foot needed to be amputated so that the infection will be removed. Kris' mommy was in tears. But they had no choice but to sign a waiver for the amputation as it is the only way to save his life. We relieved that the surgeon advised that he tried to save the foot. But the foot did not seem to heal and the blood test showed that the bacteria did not go away...even after the third trial of antibiotics. A normal patient would need a stronger dose of antibiotics to kill the bacteria. Unfortunately, daddy's kidney state won't be able to handle such a dose. The only choice he had was to have his leg cut off to remove the source of infection. As the infectious disease doctor confirmed this, the family once again found themselves in tears. Kris' mommy burst into tears in front of her children and I, uttering broken words I could not understand as she caresses her husband lying in bed. They knew the amputation is life-threatening considering the diabetic condition of Mr. Mongis.

The amputation is schedule for today.

Out of resources

The Mongis family has now run out of their resources and their hopes in life are shaken. Kris, who is my best friend told me that they have attempted every financial assistance they could get. But their Philhealth benefits, HMO insurance have all maxed out. They have also attempted loans, charity donations from the office of the Mayor, the PCSO (Philippine Charity Sweepstake Office) aside from pulling resources from relatives. Virtually, everything and everyone including myself.

A Plan

It seems that the only way for the Mongis family to put an end to this is to give Kris' dad a kidney transplant after he survives the amputation which will happen in a few minutes. Because even when the amputation is successful, they will no longer be able to sustain another hospitalization or another infection again, which they know is bound to happen with his condition.

A kidney transplant will give Mr. Nonilo Mongis a second chance to live, lead a healthy lifestyle, work and be with his children again. It will also allow Kris to continue to support his youngest brother to college and to save money for his own future. But they need financial support to do this considering how expensive a kidney transplant is.

With this, I am humbly reaching out to your financial help no matter how big or small as it can change the life of the Mongis family.
