A plea for help for my son Erniel Reyes Hermosilla, 10 years old, who's currently battling cancer of the brain.
Erniel is a smart, talented, lovable and sweet child. Little did we know that he'll be struck with such a complicated illness.
At the age of 8, Erniel started to show symptoms which we initially thought as an eye infection. Eventually, his eyes started to cross and his left body became weak. He had a hard time to even move his arm. We sought an advice from an Ophthalmologist who told us to seek further consultation to a Pedia Neurosurgeon. Series of tests were done and when the result was out, it really crushed our world. It said that my son is positive to have a DIFFUSE BRAIN STEM GLIOMA or in much common term, CANCER OF THE BRAIN located on his brain stem.
Based on their initial diagnosis, they said that my son might only live in the next 2 to 6 months. It was a shock. It felt like my heart was crushed into pieces. They can't operate on him because of the tumor's complicated location which is on his brain stem. If they do an open-head surgery, the higher risk that he'll die. The only choice we had at that time was radiation therapy.
This picture was taken on his first session of radiation therapy. He was so weak. For almost a week, he was not able to walk on his own. We were referred to another hospital and neurosurgeon who can better support the treatment he needed, but we had to endure the very expensive cost.
He had radiation sessions from December 2016 until February 2017. He soon started to show improvements as he gained back his appetite and was able to walk little by little. But he was still weak especially on the left part of his body. In March 2017, he had series of tests again to check on the tumor's growth. Fortunately, there was a slight decrease in its size. His Neurosurgeon referred us to an Oncologist and Hematologist. They advised that he start taking an oral chemotherapy medicine as there is no more cure that can take. At that time, he was given a maximum of 2 years to live.
We held on to our faith. We believed in HIM. We saw his will to live and we will support him all the way. We will never back down without a fight. That thought kept us fighting.
For two years, we kept praying and fighting. Our dear Lord, moved us and have shown us small miracles day by day.
This picture was taken last February 18, 2019. He was rushed to the hospital as he was non-responsive. He can't eat nor drink. No oral pain reliever can subside the pain. According to the doctors, the tumor started to enlarge. They can't do anything but just give him pain relievers. We were worried if his heart can take the extreme pain he was feeling.
On his 4th day of confinement, he started eating and drinking again, though on very small amounts only. It broke our hearts to see him crying due to excruciating pain in his head. The doctors gave him a gradually increasing dose of pain reliever. We were advised that if it won't work, the last option was to give him morphine.
After a few more days, he was discharged but he remained bedridden and can only mobilized using his wheel chair. He had to continue his oral chemotherapy, steroids, monthly check-up and laboratory tests. We were also advised that he needs to have an MRI quarterly.
This is the latest medical abstract of my son.
The cost of these medicines are extremely expensive. The oral chemotherapy (Themozolamide and Thalidomide) costs at around PHP 43,500 ($855) monthly. Laboratory and MRI costs at around PHP 19,000 ($370), plus the monthly doctors fee. Estimate monthly cost is at PHP70,000 ($1,400).
Our family have been doing everything we can. We've sought the help from different government institutes and so far, they have already assisted him for a few chemo sessions in the past 2 years. We need to continue battling this war, but unfortunately, we have no more left on our savings.
I am still holding on my faith that my son will live longer. He's still holding on so we will never let go. He continues to pray for God to heal his illness. He still wants to continue his studies and to play basketball with his friends. He wants to be a soldier someday, and I do hope he'll be one. He wants to make more happy memories with our family and his friends.
I would like to knock on everyone's kind heart. Please help us with this battle. Please help save a life and prove that miracle does exist. He have survived more than 2 years and I know that he can beat it, he can fight it!
