Campaign Story
Hello Everyone
My name is Mye and I created this fundraising campaign for my sister, Wilma, who is currently battling breast cancer. I aim to give you a glimpse of who my sister is, how her battle started, and why she deserves a fighting chance to beat cancer.
She is the eldest of 6 siblings. Since childhood, she has always been the “Ate” (older sister) you could look up to and lean on. She has this leader attitude emanating positivity and a "can do" mindset. When we were young, she was already very independent, smart, empowered, and intelligent; a one-of-a-kind girl.
When a family member or a friend needs help, she doesn’t hesitate to be there and extend a hand. She doesn’t think twice about it. It’s like her life mission in this world is to make a lasting impact on the people around her, and she doesn’t fail to do just that.
And so when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, we all thought she deserved all the help in the world as we all do.
The Diagnosis
She had multiple benign breast cysts in her twenties and did not think much of this because it is non-cancerous and treatable. Also, coming from a low-income family and third-world country, we have very limited access to the health care system.
Fast forward to 2004, her husband suffered from a stroke caused by hypertension and was partially disabled. Since then, my sister became the breadwinner of the family. She decided to work abroad, alone and away from her two kids, to earn money to pay for her husband’s treatments and medications, and to support her whole family.
In 2009, she transferred to Bangladesh to work as a Merchandising Manager in a garment manufacturing company. The threat of cancer started looming over her in late 2020 when she was diagnosed by an Oncologist in Bangladesh.
Last December 2020, my sister flew home for a Christmas vacation and went for a second opinion. We are all optimistic for a favorable diagnosis but to our dismay, she was clinically diagnosed with malignant BREAST CANCER STAGE 3C. This was indeed a life-changing situation for the whole family. But my sister chose to be strong for her family as we--along with our other siblings are ready to battle the Big C together.
The Treatments
Her life seemingly has come to a halt, my sister Wilma is battling breast cancer head-on with hope, positivity, and faith in our great God. While financial support was available in the first few months of her fight, the medical bills just keep coming and ballooning -- a saddening and unfortunate plight of all other cancer patients. The longer she fights, the more expensive her treatments and medicine become.
Breast cancer stage 3C is a treatable yet aggressive cancer, hence requiring aggressive treatment. It means that cancer has spread beyond the tumor and has possibly gone to lymph nodes. And so her doctor advised the following procedures:
- Eight (8) cycles of Chemotherapy
- Chest CT Scan - to evaluate the cancer.
- Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM)
- Oral Chemo or Radiation - as the last procedure depending on the result of MRM.
Some of her treatments are being covered by the Department of Health (DOH) by God’s grace. However, not all medicines and diagnostic procedures are covered and are consequently putting an enormous weight on my sister’s finances.
With a non-working husband, two children to support, and cancer to defeat and overcome, it would be virtually impossible for my sister to afford her treatments, medications, and living expenses, even with her family’s help. Her life savings from working abroad are depleting fast, and she will soon let go of all her hard-earned investments – to cover all the expenses.
For some people, this would be considered rock-bottom. But my sister and our family refuse to give up.
About this Fundraising Campaign
