My grandfather had been admitted for two weeks now. He'd spend the entire first week in the ICU, and thankfully, he was allowed to transfer to a private room, which happened only a few days ago.

Following the emergency admission to the hospital, my grandfather was diagnosed with COPD or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It is a common lung disease and its primary cause is cigarette smoking. Having COPD makes it hard to breathe, and this is exactly the situation my grandfather's in. Now it would have been better if that was the only problem, but sadly, it wasn't. Because of his shortness of breath, the beating of his heart became irregular and soon after that he had a heart attack. Ever the cautious one, my grandfather always made sure he had a healthy heart. He had regular visits to his cardiologist, had multiple ECGs done, a couple of tests here and there, his heart was in good condition. He only developed a heart disease because of his quick shallow breaths, which was ultimately caused by his COPD. The Doctor told us his heart enlarged because his pulse rate was allowed to beat at above what is normal, and they advised us to let him undergo such a major operation.

My grandfather is a patient with lung disease and heart disease. Unfortunately, another complication entered the equation. Medical examination later confirmed he had developed acute kidney failure from the infection in his lungs and as a result, one of his kidneys diminished in size. He had not been able to urinate in weeks, and up till now his kidneys haven't showed any signs of improvement. At least, not yet.

Addressing these diseases are the numerous medications and supplements prescribed each day. Tests are frequently carried out to monitor his vital signs and cardiac rhythm. Every other day he would undergo dialysis, to scrub the toxins out. Future procedures are still unknown, especially the treatment for his heart condition, but already the hospital bills are beyond what we can bear. We've already sought help from the domestic government agencies, and are still awaiting assistance.

Assisted by the hospital, my grandfather is very slowly being restored to health. We don't want to hinder his recovery because of shortage of money. My grandfather is tough, brave, and most of all, selfless. Seeing him fully well and healthy would not only mean an answered prayer, but also another obstacle conquered.

Any help you are able to give us will be very much appreciated. Thank you and God Bless you.
