The Woman Who Gives Her All to the Strays of Sarajevo

That woman is Milena Malesevic. She lives in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She has seen it all; the horrors of war for the Bosnian people, but most of all the human failure to care for the weak and powerless, the cats and dogs that live there. That is why Saving Suffering Strays Sarajevo was created – to help Milena rescue the dogs that otherwise would be left on the streets to die. It is a non-profit private organisation that rescues and rehomes stray dogs around the world by hosting fundraising auctions, raffles etc. SSSS also has an adoption page. All on Facebook or on the website http://savingsufferingstrays.com. Milena was even a cover girl, a few years ago, in Time magazine, but that did not help her task.

When there is a catastrophe like war, or economic downfall, the pets feel it straight away. They are thrown out onto the streets to fend for themselves because people need their money to live. In Sarajevo, Milena Malesevic comes into the picture. She works 24/7/365. She rescues all she can, she houses all she can, she adopts out as many as are wanted, but that is not yet all. She also feeds hundreds of strays in the streets of Sarajevo. She depends entirely on donations, she has no other funding. She has vet bills to pay, all the surgeries to spay/neuter. All outgoing rescued strays are also microchipped. And that costs. She takes even the most seriously injured dogs and nurses them to health in her flat. She is struggling with the financial side of the rescue work. The strays keep coming, because they have not been spayed or neutered by any national program in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is a heroine because of what she does.

She rescued about 350 dogs last year, adopted out about 150 and has more than 240 dogs in her kennels. She desperately needs funds for food, kennels and vet bills, because every time she finds a litter of puppies, she scoops them up and off she goes to the vet. She has had real heartbreakers in her rescue dogs, like Zuco and Wendy (last two photos in the gallery). She has a loyal group of donors, but they can't keep up with the costs that rise every year. She tries to protect all strays from being mutilated, crucified, used as a target practice, burnt alive, skinned alive (just for fun!), and poisoned. The list seems never ending. This is what Milena faces in her rescue efforts every single day. These are the reasons we have created this crowdfunding fundraiser. To help Milena Malesevic.
