Our Impact

It has been several decades since there has been a general purpose bookstore that folks in eastern Bushwick can talk about having any sort of regular presence in their lives growing up, let alone a bookstore that also carries titles in the predominant language of the neighborhood. In a neighborhood where gentrification and displacement run rampant, a community resource by and for those who already call Bushwick home is invaluable. Mil Mundos tells our story, speaks our language, and provides for our needs.

We want to partner with the 30+ schools in the Bushwick area to organize class trips to students' local bookstore. We want to host book fairs at local educational institutions that highlight narratives that community members can identify with. We want to host events that delve into unique and diverse experiences within Black and Latinx culture. We want to unite like-minded writers and publishers, and serve as a network point for folks to meet as they share their stories and the stories of others. With your help, we can do all of this, and so much more.

Our Mission Statement

Mil Mundos Books’ primary mission is to remain dedicated to larger-scale anti-gentrification work in eastern Bushwick and beyond, and to maintain a curation and space that celebrates Black and Latinx heritage and supports the narratives of these cultures. Our two strategies toward this end are:

1. Proactively engage with the community - especially with Black and Latinx communities adversely affected by incoming commerce - to maintain a two-way conversation about how best to encourage and support their autonomy and agency in their own neighborhood and lives.

2. Maintain a culture of acceptance, inclusivity, and healthy communication both within the store and as an organization overall, serving as a model of our commitment to our values in any work environment.

While we are currently organized as an LLC, it is our goal to eventually transition over to either a worker-owned business model or to a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. Any profits made after paying off debts and ensuring fair wages for those working the storefront on a daily basis will be reinvested into the community and furthering the mission of the space.

Other Ways You Can Help

There are other MAJOR ways you can help!

VOLUNTEER! If you over 18, live in the NYC area, and speak both English and Spanish, you can make a direct and immediate impact by helping make spaces like these more accessible to the neighborhood. Get involved in our collective process and fill out this form to get started: https://tinyurl.com/volunteeratmm.

EDUCATORS: we want to work with you directly. Interested in writing curriculums for schools based on the literature we prioritize? Or maybe you would like to work with us to organize a class trip to the shop, or a book fair at your school? We would love to hear from you! Email [email protected] to get the conversation started.

LEADERS: we are currently looking for folks who would like to get involved in our broader collective process. Our team right now is small but committed to our mission, and we are always open to working with others who share our passion for this project as well. If you are interested, you can also email [email protected] to schedule a time for us to all meet up!

SPREAD THE WORD! Share our campaign on social media, talk about it with your friends and neighbors, come by the store for a visit or a workshop! Planned upcoming workshops include:

  • soap making: learn how to make soap from ingredients in your kitchen that you love
  • candle making: learn how to make your own delicious candles at home
  • block carving: learn how to make wooden hand-carved block prints
  • fermentation lab: learn how to make kimchi, sauerkraut or pickled veggies

Thanks from all of us at Mil Mundos. With your support, we will keep this vibrant and crucial community resource alive for many years to come.
