My wife and I are trying to raise funds to support immigrant families living in South Africa who are on a brink of losing their homes due to the current global crisis.

Just to mention a few:

The first couple with their 4 kids. Owns an apartment. Due to covid-19 and the government-imposed lockdown, they have not been able to pay the levy (property taxes) arrears of 42,139.76 ZAR (+- 2,500.00 USD). Now the body corporate and their lawyers have threatened to put the apartment in auction by end of July.

The second couple with their 3 kids rents an apartment. Right before the pandemic starts, he was stabbed while doing taxi and his car hijacked. Thank God he recovered from the wounds. He has now exhausted the small savings he had paying rents. Starting August 1, he won’t be able to pay his monthly rent of 6,788.00 ZAR (+-400 USD).

We have identified other families who are facing the same challenges and can benefit from this Fundraising. Many of them have lost their jobs and finding jobs of any kind just to make a living has been hard. It is Winter period in SA. Some of can’t even afford to stay warm. Children are the ones that suffer the most.

SA government has made it difficult for immigrants to have access to their UIF (unemployment benefits), relief programs and doesn’t offer any program protect them from losing home and being evicted from landlords due to financial hardship caused by the pandemic.

Since the beginning of the crisis, my wife and I have been sending money (taking from our paychecks) to reach as many families as we can so that they can have food and procure essential things for survival (including sponsoring kids online schooling). But right now, we have limited financial means to address their predicament on housing.

Our goal is to get enough funds and help these families so they can be able to:

  • Pay off arrears on rents or levies.
  • Pay at least 6 months of levy and rent in the hope that by then their situation would have improved as more businesses re-open.
  • Support their kids online learning requirements
  • Afford electricity to stay warm and clean water.
  • Afford food and essentials.

Some have joined those who have been living in big tents since last October. Below links show how they have been forsaken to their own fates (social distancing is not even possible).
