Hello, my name is Karin Demkova, I’m 18 years old and I’m from Slovakia. I would like to spend my summer at a Pre-university course in medicine at King’s College London. I have already received an unconditional offer and the admission letter is enclosed below. I’m trying to raise $2257 (£1796/ 2000€) to help pay my tuition fees and travel expenses, that would make my stay a lot easier.

I received a 1500€ ($1693) grant from Nadácia Tatrabanka, but this will not cover all of my expenses. The full price of the summer school is £3145 ($3941). My flight tickets cost 293€ ($331). My King’s College Accommodation is located further from the teaching campus, meaning I will need to buy a travel card for public transportation which costs £70 ($88). This sums up to around $2667, but I am able to finance the $400 and additional expenses for food with the help of my parents.

The King’s College Pre-University Summer School provides the opportunity to study a chosen subject on an undergraduate level and helps students prepare for their future at university. It is an intensive two-week program, combining academic classes, class excursions and university preparation advice.

I was a very curious child and I have been interested in science ever since I can remember. Some years have passed and I have currently finished my first year of the International Baccalaureate (IB DP) and my inclination to sciences led me to take chemistry, biology, and physics, all on a high level as subjects. I have received 7s from all of my subjects in the two first half-terms.

My determination helped me to win the national round of the Young Physicist Tournament. Later on, I had the honor to represent my country on the International Young Physicist Tournament in Singapore, where we as Slovakia obtained bronze medals. The following year we achieved a 2nd place on the European round and I continued in the Young Physicist Tournament as a team captain.

My scientific knowledge was also broadened by two internships. First was a year-long internship at Slovak Technical University at a department of particular materials. During this time I became a co-author of a scientific paper regarding the angle of repose of powders. The second was a week-long internship at the University of Groningen at the department of chemistry. Here I observed progressive methods in organic chemistry. Because of my interest in genetics, I decided to take part in the international seminar of Evolutionary biology. I finished at 5th place out of over 120 participants and was invited to the Institute of Science and Technology Austria for a 3-day long visit. Based on my achievements I was chosen to be one of 4 students from Slovakia who got to participate in the Experience Cambridge. Through this program, I got to experience medicine and biology lectures and the University of Cambridge.

My interest in medicine led me to take part in shadowing experiences in a hospital. There I was able to observe the work of doctors. My first experience in the medical environment was a 1 day long shadowing in radiology and diagnostic imaging. My other experience was a month-long shadowing in gynecological oncology. I have also undertaken a 3-day long course at the Red Cross, where I was taught the first aid and obtained a European certificate. From the start of this school year, I have been a part of the Young Medic’s Club at my school. Here we organize debates and lectures with doctors or medics for prospective medical students. Since March of this year, I have been volunteering in a hospital for a few hours every week, playing with children patients at the cardiovascular department.

Some time ago, I came across the Pre-University Summer School at one of the world’s best universities, King’s College and I were excited that I might be able to spend summer learning about diseases and their treatment, the future of medicine in space and exchange ideas with students all around the world. The summer school might help me to increase my chances of studying medicine in the UK what is a dream I’m hoping to pursue.

I would be very happy if you could help me support my dream by either donating or sharing this campaign :)

Thank you very much!
