Help me save my eyes

My name is Eugenia and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes since 1997.

A few days ago, I received a dreaded diagnosis: advanced proliferative diabetic retinopathy in both eyes.

In the images you can see new and abnormal blood vessels. If not taken care of promptly, I could become blind.

I was prescribed a treatment that consists of two things:

1. A series of six (6) injections in each eye with a drug called Avastin (bevacizumab) in order to stop the abnormal growth of blood vessels and prevent their recurrent growth over time. Each injection costs $500; the total for both eyes would be $6,000.

2. A laser treatment to shrink the blood vessels and stop the blood leakage. Each laser treatment costs $1,500; the total for both eyes would be $3000.

One of the recommendations I was given by my ophthalmologist is to return to normal blood glucose levels, which I am having a really hard time to achieve because of all the stress triggered by this diagnosis.

Mi nombre es Eugenia. Desde 1997 fui diagnosticada con diabetes tipo 1.

Hace unos días recibí un terrible diagnóstico que toda persona diabética teme: retinopatía diabética proliferativa o avanzada en ambos ojos.

En las imágenes se puede observar vasos sanguíneos nuevos y anormales en mis ojos. Si no recibo atención urgente, podría quedarme ciega.

Para evitar la ceguera, me recetaron un tratamiento que consta de dos pasos:

1. Una serie de seis (6) inyecciones en cada ojo con un medicamento llamado Avastin (bevacizumab) para detener el crecimiento anormal de vasos sanguíneos y evitar su proliferación en el futuro. Cada inyección cuesta $500; el total para ambos ojos sería de $6,000.

2. Un tratamiento con láser para encoger los vasos sanguíneos y así detener el sangrado. Cada tratamiento con láser cuesta $1,500, por lo que el total para ambos ojos sería de $3000.

Una de las recomendaciones que me dio mi oftalmólogo es hacer lo posible para que mi nivel de glucosa en la sangre vuelva a la normalidad, pero me ha resultado muy difícil lograrlo debido a todo el estrés que me generó este diagnóstico inesperado.
