On March 12th, Keannu has been diagnosed with an aggressive malignant brain tumor in his pineal gland and is now fighting the battle of his life. If you know Keannu or have heard of him, you know that he has such a positive, loving and giving outlook on life and is loved by many. He is a quarterback, a wrestler, and a baseball catcher. Keannu also holds a 3.5 GPA, is an active volunteer in his community and has dreams of going to college and living life to the fullest.

On Saturday December 3, 2016, Keannu was admitted to the Intensive Care unit (PICU) when a CT scan showed a mass in his brain. On Sunday December 4th, he underwent an MRI which showed that the mass was a tumor the size of a ping pong ball and was located in the center of his brain in the pineal gland. It was also found that the tumor was creating a blockage of CSF fluid and that the pressure of the blockage needed to be released. On Tuesday December 6th, Keannu underwent a procedure called an ETV (endoscopic third ventriculostomy) for the treatment of hydrocephalus with the goal of releasing the pressure the trapped CSF was putting on his brain. The ETV procedure was successful in releasing the pressure off the brain; however, we learned that the tumor in his brain was an aggressive malignant tumor that was unfortunately bleeding into his brain.

That day we received the results of another MRI and learned that Keannu was now suffering from ischemia in his thalamus which is a condition where there is insufficient blood flow to that part of the brain which is the reason why Keannu is not waking up. This was now our primary concern and giving Keannu time and support was going to be critical. That evening, our neurologist visited Keannu and called out commands to initiate movement from Keannu. Keannu extended his arm which the neurologist stated, “That is good but we want to see a thumbs up which could take days to see.” At that point Keannu raised his hand and gave a thumbs up!! Tears and cheers spread through everyone present from family to medical staff. We knew that Keannu was fighting and could hear us!

On Thursday December 8th at approximately 1:00 am, Keannu started posturing and coughing in response to phlegm in his lungs which caused pressure in his brain. A CT scan and an X-ray was performed. From the CT scan we learned that the ETV tube put in Tuesday was clogged and needed to be replaced to allow the flow of CSF to continue. During this procedure, the decision was also made to paralyze Keannu to steer away anymore uncontrolled muscle movements to avoid damage to his brain. The X-ray results showed that Keannu had fluid in his lungs and antibiotics were immediately started and Keannu was placed on life support with 100% oxygen support.

Keannu is fighting for his life and it is not fair for someone as special as him to be going through this in such a short amount of time. I know you often see many accounts geared to raising funds but please don’t overlook this one. With all the bad things going on in this world around us, we owe it to Keannu to be his strength, support and positive outlook. We all know that money won’t change the outcome if it’s God’s will, but our family needs your support to help continue Keannu’s fight now and in the road ahead. Every donation helps, and if you cannot donate, please share this story and please pray. We know that often reasons why things happen and why they happen to great people and especially children are hard to understand but with faith and prayer we know that miracles happen. Thank you.
