ABOUT THE PROJECT - MY ROAD TO THE DAKAR
“Help me rebuild my rally dream - Dakar 2023”
I launched a crowdfunding initiative ``Bring the Car Back: Help me rebuild my rally dream”, in order to raise funds for my debut in the Dakar Rally. This campaign will remain active until May 15th, including the possibility of achieving the rewards for those who participate.
I need about 25,000€ to restore my professional rally car and bring it back to Egypt.
100% of the money raised goes towards preparing and rebuilding my rally buggy.
Besides fueling my dream project, I’ll be the first Egyptian pilot to participate in the Dakar Rally, which will celebrate its 45th edition in January 2023 in Saudi Arabia.
I am chasing a dream.. Here’s where you come in, and make history with me!
MEET THE DRIVER
My name is Gary Kehiaian and I am Egyptian.
For over forty years, the desert has always fascinated me. And it still does. Since that first visit back in the 1980s, I drive out to the Egyptian desert pretty regularly. My first participation in rallies started in 2006 and in 2010 I became the official rally driver of Esperanza rally team. (Abou Fotouh Cars). I love my trips into this wilderness. They take me away from the routine of Cairo. No noise, no overcrowding. I always try to make sure that I find new areas and discover the undiscovered. I’m approaching every trip as a piece of the puzzle completing my own experience.
Since then, I have participated in various rally-raid events. Rally racing is a long, very complex road and there are many failures along the way. The key is to learn as much as possible from each and always keep moving forward. As I was gaining experience, I wanted more from a car and I have decided to build my own professional rally car from scratch with the help of the legendary French buggy builder: Herve Cotel. The requirements for my rally car got clearer with my experience and thanks to the expertise of Herve, we managed to put together the perfect rally car of my dreams. A 4x4 racing buggy with a 3600cc Porsche 993 air-cooled dry sump engine with 255 HP.
I completed Le Rallye des Pharaons on five occasions, with different cars, and drove in local rally-raid events. This days-long trek that usually started in the shadow of the Great Pyramid at Giza, was the second longest desert rally to the Dakar Rally. Because of a series of incidents that has threatened the Egyptian rallye scene these last years, I stopped racing and I sent my car back to France.
However, the desert passion that fuels me is second to none. I’m really looking forward to racing again and experiencing some different landscapes. Here is why, this year, I’ve decided to fulfill my dream to actively participate in the Dakar Rally. Egypt, whose rough terrain lends itself to off-road driving, has prepared me for challenging conditions. Le Rallye des Pharaons served as part of my preparations for the Dakar, the most iconic and prestigious racing event.
I am drawn to this event in which the physical, mental, and mechanical demands are so extreme that just finishing can be considered a win. I not only want to be a competitor, I also want to help the sport continue to grow in Egypt and it would be an honor to be a part of the growth of the rally scene and media exposure here, at home.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO REBUILD MY RALLY DREAM?
The dream has never died, over the years it’s only grown bigger…
Here’s where you come in! While I possess the skills, drive and knowledge, a key ingredient to making my goal a reality is raising a budget capable of fulfilling the demands that the world's most iconic racing event requires. This ultimate adventure is expensive and I can only pursue it with friends and family support.
The first thing I need is to restore the car, ensure that it complies with safety measures and bring it back to Egypt. I need about 25,000€ to make this project come true. With this first stage completed and my rally car homologated by the FIA World Rally-Raid Championship, I’ll be able to take this project to the next level by looking for sponsorships and finally register for the Dakar. It has been a crazy journey building and racing with this car but I do believe this is only the beginning. #bringthecarback
WHAT ARE THE FUNDS FOR?
I’m raising money to directly fund the expenses required to restore my car and successfully enter the Dakar in January 2023. I need about 25,000€ and this includes:
- Car upgrade to FIA standards (certified tank, safety harness, extinguishing systems, safety cages…): 17,000€
- Safety equipment for driver and co-driver (helmet, suit, gloves, shoes…) : 4,000€
- Car shipping from France to Egypt: 4,000€
