I'm a Canadian nutrition student going to Tacloban, Philippines for 3 weeks. I want to help make a difference in the world for the better by using my knowledge of nutriton. Growing up in Canada I have taken it for granted that healthy meals would be provided for me and that everyone knew what healthy foods were. However, in many other countries around the world, just getting enough food to feed a family can be a struggle, so health isn't a priority. I want to help change this by using the skills I have developed through university and in the workplace.
While I am in Tacloban I will be combating food security by planning and providing meals to preschool children as well as educating mothers on nutrition. The goal of this program is to promote self-sustainable community programs that decrease hunger and food insecurity with healthy foods. This is especially important as chronic heart disease, diabetes, vitamin A deficiency and malnourishment are unfortunately common in this population due to a diet high in sugar, salt and fat.
I hope though this program to build relationships within the community, especially as I will be staying with a Filipino family for my time there. I also hope to help families to make small changes in their diets that they can sustain which will help them to live healthier, longer lives.
Any donations are appreciated to help me reach these goals and to help to increase health in the Philippines. All money donated will go towards the costs of the program including the food provided to preschoolers and the homestay. Any additional donations will help to fund my flights to and from Tacloban.
Thank you for reading and for helping me help others
