I plan to take a gap year starting in June of 2022 before heading to university to complete a nursing degree. After I have completed my nursing degree I plan to work as an aid worker with an NGO such as doctors without borders or red cross.
Companies like these have many requirements such as experience working in a tropical environment, experience in overseas programmes, travel/work experience in developing countries, and a good command of french as many missions take place in French speaking countries such as congo and Senegal.
Due to this, I plan to complete a variety of volunteering/travel experiences in my gap year which will help me reach my end goal is becoming a humanitarian aid worker.
The first volunteering experience will take place with planmygapyear in Tanzania and I plan to go for a total of 3 weeks. Like many African countries, Tanzania faces an acute shortage of healthcare workers. Low pay, poor working conditions and limited training programs contribute to the problem. The situation is further amplified by the rising burden of HIV/AIDS treatment. Unfortunately, health standards in Tanzania have declined so much that it trails most other developing nations. The leading causes of death in Tanzania are malaria, HIV/AIDS, respiratory diseases and cardio-circulatory diseases. Many of these major causes of death and serious illness are difficult to avoid. Planmygapyear has collaborated with the government hospital and community clinic within the Arusha and Meru district of the country. The aim of this project is to support local doctors and nurses and gain insight into how healthcare is provided there as it differs from how it is provided in the UK.
Flight, travel insurance, transport to the project, lunch, return airport transfer, visa and volunteer work permit costs are not included in the package, I also have a variety of other programme fees that need to be paid and so a portion of donations will go towards that.
Secondly, I intend to spend some of my time in France in order to improve my french skills in preparation to be an aid worker. My time will be spent volunteering with different environmental, educational, and charitable projects. Again, some of the money raised will go towards, travel, visa and other costs.
I plan to also take a variety of courses including first aid training, pre-nursing student programmes, international development courses, french courses and many more, these usually come with a fee and so donations will go towards this too.
Thank you in advance,
