Help Me Inspire Students to Succeed

My name is Pinkie Yolisa. Through 20 years of teaching at Ikaya Primary School in Kayamandi, South Africa, I have earned a reputation for going above and beyond; I work hard to help children flourish inside and outside the classroom. “I am motivated by my love for the children, and the love that they show me. Seeing them grow up and giving back to their community is inspiring.” Teaching is more than my job; it is my calling. I never hesitate to take up the role of a parent, counselor, coach, or social worker to make sure my kids have the support they need. I strive to be the type of role model that children in my community need to help them rise above the poverty, violence, and brokenness they are surrounded by.

Born and raised in Stellenbosch, my passion for adventure and learning has taken me on the road less traveled. Beyond my responsibilities in the classroom, I am a qualified gymnastics coach and judge, a promoter of South Africa’s indigenous games, and a strategic advisor to sport for development NGO training4changeS. I have twice enjoyed the privilege of traveling overseas to learn more about teaching methodologies and school systems - experiences that have helped me become a more dynamic teacher.

This year I have an opportunity to travel to Deleware, USA, to visit schools in the Appoquinimink School District. “I look forward to seeing how their classrooms are run, and what teaching methodologies they use. It will be a great opportunity to compare our education systems. I believe I will be able to share with the teachers in Deleware from my experiences in South Africa, and I will be able to come home with new ideas to share with local teachers so we can help improve the work we are doing in our schools.”
