Campaign Story
It's never easy putting yourself out there. Asking a girl out. Pitching a business idea. Or something as nerve wrecking as competing in front of your friends and loved ones. You could lose spectacularly. But you could also win amazingly.
I debated with myself for over a month before finally making the decision to launch this campaign. And yes, this campaign could fail miserably. Or I could get all the support I need to make my bold ambition come true. And in the process, prove to myself and anyone who may look towards me for inspiration, that anything and everything is possible once you set your mind to it and make a concrete plan with action steps to get after it.
I've been doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for 12 years now. I'm a proud coach to the most dominant home grown BJJ team in Malaysia and some of the nicest, kindest and most hard working individuals one could ever meet. I'm a 2 time Gi and No Gi IBJJF Pan Pacific Champion (2017 & 2018). I'm a proud father of 11 rescued cats and 5 dogs. I live a simple life. And I live my life governed by values and principles aligned with my chosen path - that of a martial artist.
I need all the help and support to realise my podium aspirations at the 2019 World Masters in Vegas this August. I would also like to repeat last year's feat and be a 3 time IBJJF Gi and No Gi Pan Pacific champion later in October. To kickstart my ambition, I will be competing at the Pan Ams in March which will be held in Irvine, California. And after that I will make my way to San Francisco to get me neck looked at and treated by the legendary Dr Peter Goldman.
Now, I understand that this may all seem a bit selfish. To ask for your generosity and support to realise an ambition of mine. But my desire to be a World Champion goes beyond accolades and praises. The medals will fade. And the accomplishments will be a cherished memory. But the difference I get to make in the lives of my friends and students, that will forever be my legacy. I want to be an example that anything is possible. I want to be an example of grit, determination and perseverance.
I'm doing this for that Black belt who told a Blue Belt me that I should just quit BJJ. Because I was THAT bad at it. I'm doing this for that one person who may one day find himself or herself at a crossroad in life, and instead of giving up and giving in to bad circumstances, is reminded of how I did the seemingly impossible and became a World Champion. I'm doing this for the many doctors who told me I can never compete again, and that I should just retire from jiu jitsu. I'm doing this for the average person, just like me, who has no obvious talent or physical gifts.
I'm very well aware that life is short. And nothing lasts forever. While I can and while I am able to, I want to achieve everything I possibly can in this art that I have sacrificed so much for. I have given my absolute best for the past 12 years and I do not want to look back in regret. I do not want to ask myself, what if.
So, if I in some way shape or form have made a tiny difference in your life. Whether it be through a technique. A concept. Sage advice. Or a dick joke that made your day. However and whatever way I have impacted your life, please support my World Champion ambition by contributing. So I can continue to make a difference. And be the best coach I can possibly be. If you cannot contribute, please share my campaign on your social media along with a personal story of how I made a difference in your jiu jitsu, and maybe your life.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for believing in me and supporting me!
