“Leg Up Required- Pun intended”

Time to look after myself.

Since 2012 I have devoted my life to the service of others. I started the Paul Steyn Foundation to raise funds to assist deserving financially disadvantaged South African amputees with prosthetic legs.

Why?

Because I am an amputee who was helped by someone else to get a prosthetic leg once. I felt the need to pay it forward. I was able, through my foundation, to change the lives of 23 fellow amputees in the course of the last ten years. It was important to show amputees, as well as the general public, the difference that a prosthesis can make in an amputee's life. To that end I have walked over 15000km to raise funds, skydived, white water rafted, bungee jumped and did various other extreme activities to get the message across.

In 2018, I was chosen as one of the Mail & Guardian's 200 Young South Africans for my humanitarian work.

Unfortunately, it took a toll on my body and I am no longer able to walk long distances, as the knee of my good leg is giving trouble. The foundation is now raising funds through other means.

I have done an internship with a film maker for a few years. When he emigrated from South Africa to America, he gave me some of his equipment. I have put it to good use to make a living for myself, independent of my charity work.

Unfortunately, my equipment is getting old and normal wear and tear over the years has had an impact on the quality of work I can deliver, which in turn has had a negative impact on my finances. I need to upgrade and need the funds to do that.
