Hello everybody!

My name's Anaïs, I'm Dutch, 27 years old, born in the Italian part of Switzerland and just graduated in the Netherlands in social sciences and orthopedagogics (special education). After some life changing experiences during the last years I decided to go to Indonesia to help children who don't need just some love and warmth, but also education and in some cases special education. Indonesia, because my mother's family is Indonesian and when I came to this beautiful country for a visit four years ago I realized how important it is for these children to get schooling, especially for children with special needs. Here in Indonesia, disabled children are often seen as something bad, instead of little human beings who just need a little more help and care in their daily life. Since most Indonesian people believe in reincarnation, they think that when a child is disabled it had been a bad person in his past life. Because of the shame of their family these children are often hidden and don't get the chance of getting therapy, going to school or play with other children.

Since February I am volunteering in a small school in Jimbaran, Bali, called Yayasan Mentari Fajar. This is a small non-governmental foundation and school specialised in educating and fostering children with special needs, such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, ADHD, ADD and learning disability. It is an inclusive school, meaning that some children going to this school aren't disabled, but don't have enough money to pay for a normal school.

The mission of the school is to give all children, with or without a disability, a chance to learn the basic knowledge taught at every other school. To give all the children a future and a chance to learn and to make friends. For the disabled children therapy is also very important, to be able to integrate in daily life.

There are about 75 children going to this school, even though the school is too small. The classrooms are not big enough and need to be rebuild. The roof is made of asbestos and the walls between the classrooms are made from triplex, which makes it the temperature rise inside the rooms. Most of the children suffer from hyperactivity and need a peaceful place where they can learn and play, something the school can't give them at the moment. There's also a lack of material for the children to play with, and they haven't enough tables and chairs.

This school needs to be rebuild urgently and get some new material, therefore we need some funds.

With the support of all of you I can give these children a better and safer future at their school. Every donation, no matter what size, is a huge help!

What will happen with the money you donate?
Together with local people, first of all I will rebuild the school; make new classrooms, toilets, provide for water supply, build a new roof, make a library and buy more tables and chairs. I will keep record of every outgo and let the donators know by email what the money is used for!

I ask you to be generous and to share this message with all your friends!

Ciao a tutti!
