Help me help Guzi

Guzi, my 7 year old pug and best friend, was diagnosed with a mast cell tumour in his lymph node which we were at first told was inoperable.

Upon 3rd opinion, however, it turned out that not all hope was lost, and our wonderful vet removed as much of it as he could. This cost over €800 when considering the price of the surgery itself as well as an ultrasound, blood tests, a biopsy, courier, antibiotics, painkillers etc.

The next step is a CT scan at a human hospital which will cost €500-600 (including a vet presence) so as to determine whether the cancer has metastasized further. In the meantime our vet has suggested chemo. Of course i was wary as the word chemo brought to mind images of my poor baby weak and nauseous. Although the thought of losing Guzi sickens me, I am determined that quality of life should be a priority. However our vet said that while he cannot exclude some side effects, dogs tolerate chemo much better than humans and that he should do well. I do not even know yet what cost i’ll be looking at for chemo.

I could hardly bring myself to ask the vet whether he was hoping the chemo would eradicate what’s left of the cancer, but i did and he said that he hopes so, and that Guzi has a 30-40% chance of recovering.

Considering that just 2 weeks ago i was told to take him home and keep him comfortable and happy and expect him to die soon, 30-40% is amazing!

Of course i’d go hungry if it meant helping my baby. Thankfully, things are not yet that dire, however as expected these unexpected vet bills and treatment costs are quite a burden.

I never thought i’d be in this position, and i’ve thought long and hard before starting this page because pride is also a thing, but here i am. Every little helps, and i will be eternally grateful for every single euro which goes towards helping my little Guzi.
