Hello! I am taking a year off between high school and college to volunteer abroad! One of my destination involves volunteering for the Thailand Elephant Project through Plan My Gap Year!
Through ethical care, elephants who have sadly been captured from the wild or bred in captivity are given a second chance at life within this program. Large amounts of forested land surround the Rescue Center where the elephants are free to roam in natural surroundings. The elephant enclosures are about 12.4 acres each and no elephants are EVER chained up- day or night.
According to PMGY, the Asian elephant population is struggling to survive with about 2,200 individuals left. The elephants who are being cared for in the Rescue Center have been trained/broken to work in the tourist and logging industry and unfortunately there are no laws to prevent this mistreatment and that is why volunteer work is imperative.
Typical duties for the volunteers include feeding the elephants, cleaning their enclosures, washing the elephants, walking the elephants to the forest, creating enrichments, maintaining enclosures, pools and mud baths, and harvesting plant matter, including banana trees and grasses.
I will be volunteering for 8 weeks leaving October 25 and returning December 22 and need help covering the program fee, vaccinations, and other medicines. Any donation will be greatly appreciated and I am so excited to experience different cultures and make an impact while doing so! Thank you so much for your support!!!
