A 2 week volunteer project helping orphans

7% of all children in India are orphans. Orphanages across India lack the funding, resources and manpower to look after these vulnerable children. All children deserve a safe haven to live and the nurturing in which to grow. PMGY support three main orphanages in the Faridabad area.

PMGY fund and support an orphanage for 10 children aged from 6 to 15 years old. The orphanage is located next to the Volunteer House, so the children receive regular support from our volunteers throughout the day. There is an orphanage mother who manages the home on a day-to-day basis but volunteers play an important role in looking after the children in their free time. This ranges from helping them with their homework, to playing games. The children from the orphanage attend school during the day. Therefore volunteers tend can take part in one of our other projects during the daytime and then help out at the orphanage in the late afternoon when the children return from school.

We also support a girls home which is located around a 10 minute drive from the Volunteer House. The orphanage was founded in 1992 with just three girls but nowadays provides a home to 85 girls aged from 6 to 24! Volunteers help with organising activities for the girls, helping them learn English and completing their homework. As some of the girls are older, volunteers can help teach them advanced English as well as computer skills. Just spending time with the girls really makes their day! Please note that only females are permitted to volunteer at the girls home.

Lastly, we support a Christian orphanage that is home to 10 children aged from 6 to 15 years of age. The home was founded in 2009 by a church-group and many of the children come from very troubled backgrounds. PMGY volunteers help in much the same way as with the other orphanages, working in the afternoons for around 3 to 4 hours per day. Helping the children with their homework, teaching English, organising activities and providing general support to the staff at the orphanage.

We allocate volunteers to a placement based on the needs at the time. However if you have a particular preference of which orphanage you’d like to work in, then you can outline this request in the ‘special requirements’ of the online application form.
