Hi! I'm Roberto Nares. I was a Security Guard in Manila Bulletin for all my life. But sadly, age caught up to me. The company decided that I am already a liability due to my age, so I was included in their recent layoff.

I am already 59 this year, so it's hard for me to find a job especially if you're in a country with rampant age discrimination. I was trying to put my hard-earned money into a small business of selling meat to our community (pork, chicken, beef, fish) and then I suffered a stroke which paralyzed half of my body.

All of the money that I'm planning to invest were used to pay for my medical bills, else I won't be able to leave the hospital. I have 10 kids, I know it's a lot, but while I was still working, I was able to provide for them.

We are not a wealthy family when it comes to money but I always make sure to provide them at least their basic necessities. I'm currently undergoing physical therapy sessions so I can resume control of my left side body and learn how to speak clearly again.

Just this month, I was recently diagnosed to have kidney stones. I don't know what to do, I cry every night, asking God why did he give me a challenge that seems insurmountable.

My daughter told me there's a site where you can try to request assistance from other people who are in better circumstances, so I took this shot, I requested her help to translate my story in English and upload it here.

If I will be given another chance, I'll make myself useful to my family, I don't want them to shoulder all the burden, I want to be the same dependable father that I was to them before all these unfortunate things happened.

I'll continue the business idea that I initially planned (selling meat), and I'll use the profits to pay for my on-going therapy sessions. And if I can still earn more, I'll pay you back...

I experienced how tough life could get, especially in a 3rd world country. But this time, I'm sure it will be different, with the support of my family (and hopefully you guys), I will continue pushing forward. I will do my best to get my life back on track.
