Campaign Story
I am now nearing completion of my PhD in Southeast Asian Studies and ever since I started in the program, I resolved to help the Rohingya women voices get heard by pursuing my PhD research about it. I am gathering my data in two locations, Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh and Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia.
Though I am a Philippine government scholar, the aid for research is not enough. I am staying for a total of 6 months in Bangladesh and Malaysia, keenly observing and immersing myself in the Rohingya communities, particularly getting to know "new meanings" of these brave Rohingya women in assessing their resilience and survival.
My PhD research intends to draw out new meanings of Rohingya women based on their lived-experiences as stateless persons in Southeast Asia.
The researching funding that I am raising includes the research stipends I am sharing to these Rohingya women, thanking them for their efforts in sharing to me their stories. It will also include the payments I give to two Rohingya refugee English translators who will be working with me for this PhD Research.
Im a consistent researcher on the Rohingya. In 2018, I won Best Paper at the ASEANnale sponsored by the University of the Philippines and presented my paper entitled "The Rohingya Schema: How the New York Times reported the Rohingya Crisis" at the International Conference on Southeast Asian Studies in Kaoshiung, Taiwan and in 2019, I presented my paper entitle "The Denial of the Rohingya Genocide: Problematizing Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the 'rule of law' in Postcolonial Myanmar" at the 8th International Conference on Southeast Asia in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
I will be traveling to Bangladesh by April after I obtained my research visa. The funds that you'll be donating will be a great help for me to get by during those times in April to July that I am staying in Bangladesh and thereafter, travel to Malaysia for another 3 months of research.
With your help, I am grateful forever and endeavors to put these experiences with the Rohingya issue in the best platform that the voices of women are central to the narratives of policymaking in Southeast Asia and beyond.
