Hello everyone, I am Samuel, also known as 'Sequinox', and I am a competitive Hearthstone player from Singapore. I am 24 years old this year and am currently trying to make a full-time career in eSports work personally.

For those that do not know, Hearthstone is a turn-based card game between two opponents, using constructed decks of 30 cards along with a selected hero with a unique power. Players use their limited mana crystals to play abilities or summon minions to attack the opponent, with the goal of reducing the opponent's health to zero.

Just this year, the landscape of the competitive scene for Hearthstone improved by a large margin, and therefore I decided to chase my dreams further and commit much more to the game. In order to do so, I quit my full-time job at my tuition centre and dropped to a part-time role. If you're wondering why I was working, I graduated from Raffles Junior College, then completed National Service and decided to take a break from studies in order to pursue a career in Hearthstone. However, in my first gap year, I ended up working for 6 days a week and did not play the game to the best of my abilities. I was good, but I knew I could do way better. Which was when I reminded myself, the reason I took a break from studies was to do something not everyone would dare to do, and not resign myself to normality, despite the hostile environment and societal expectations that I would be subject to as a Singaporean son.

So far, I am proud to say that I am one of the best players not just in Singapore, but in the whole of SEA. A list of my notable accomplishments can be found below:

2016:
1st w/ heisnotaxel and ThePandorica - Hearthstone Indonesia Team Tournament
1st - ESL APAC Summer Open #1
5th-6th - SEA Summer Preliminaries 2016
13th-16th - Hearthstone Malaysia Major 2016

2017:

2nd - ZOTAC Cup Hearthstone (Asia) Qualifier #3
2nd - ZOTAC Cup Hearthstone (Asia) Finals
Captain of Team Singapore for Hearthstone Global Games 2017
9th-12th - Hearthstone Thailand Major 2017
Ranked 6th in Asia on Gosugamers for competitive year 2017

2018:
January Ranked ladder - Top 100 (82)
February Ranked ladder - Top 100 (74)
March Ranked ladder - Top 50 (27)
May Ranked ladder - Top 100 (69)
17th-32nd - Hearthstone Championship Tour APAC Summer Playoffs
Anchor for Team Singapore for Hearthstone Global Games 2018

Other than playing competitively, I have also sought other sources of income to support this dream of mine such as streaming (I stream at https://www.twitch.tv/sequinoxtv) but not to much effectiveness as the platform is already saturated and I have not really put my name out there in the world, only within SEA. I am going to cast some events further down the road, which will also help me out financially.

I have also been working hard to build my personal profile, and my largest PR stunt to date was being chosen by Blizzard (the game publisher) to make a card reveal video for the game, which is the featured video. Have also won a game on the international stage in spectacular fashion, and the clip can be found here: https://clips.twitch.tv/SteamySeductiveMarjoramPer...

Fortunately for me, I am currently a contracted player under Team Resurgence (am very thankful to the great people who run the organisation), who pays for my travel and accommodation when I need to fly to other countries to compete in major tournaments, but I am creating this page to cover my own expenses when I am going to Korea for the Hearthstone Championship Tour Korea Major from the 6th to 13th of June. This tournament is absolutely vital for me as I am fighting to earn Hearthstone Championship Tour points to qualify for the next Playoffs (I managed to qualify for the previous one, but only managed a top 32 finish. Only the top 4 players of the Playoffs gets to advance to Worlds. However, the top 32 finish did grab me some points so that I would still be in a decent spot for the next Playoffs). It would be a huge opportunity missed if I were unable to go for the only open tournament held in Asia because of my current financial circumstances, especially when the signups were full within the first three minutes that it was open.

My current part-time job is barely enough to cover my bills and other daily necessities, and suddenly I find myself with a bank account balance of less than S$100 at the moment of typing this as I have not received my prize money from Playoffs, nor my paycheck, and I still have bills due at the moment. This is somewhat a last resort personally, as I would strongly prefer being independent as most of my friends and peers would know.

Being a professional player has been mostly a struggle so far, and not as glorious as many of you would think of it to be, but one that I am still happy to go through as I believe that my hard work will payoff some day. So do help me out this one time! I will continue working hard to sustain this dream of mine and hopefully one day I'll find myself at the top of the world where I can do my team, my country and myself proud. :)
