Hi, My name is Rohit Daniel and I am an international master's degree student at the University of Oulu, Finland. I am an Indian national and I have been working in India as a teacher for the last five years. However, I was (and am) unhappy with the education system in place in India, where the students are viewed as raw materials for future labor force, and we still follow the rote system of learning. We study for grades and ranks, and not for the sake of learning. Education is valued in terms of certificates/degrees that a person holds, which sadly can be bought for the right price. Anyone who studied in India would agree that the system is one of the most dehumanizing systems of learning. And having realizing that things need to change, I decided to go back to university and equip myself as I embark on this seemingly impossible proposition. It is my dream to at least initiate a change in the education system in India and also other developing countries, which I have realized suffer from the same shortcomings. After much googling I narrowed down to the master's degree program in Education and Globalisation in the University of Oulu, Finland. I do not regret my choice since the program has proven why the Finnish education system is considered as one of the world's best. However, my journey here hasn't been an easy one even though my studies are tuition free. First, with my low teacher's salary I simply did not have the required money to show for the residence permit. I ran around from bank-to-bank seeking for an education loan but no bank was willing to give me a loan for a master's program in arts as they apparantly do not see any value in a career in education and a few banks that were willing were bent on a collateral deposit that was of higher value than the loan amount. Unfortunately, our ancestral agricultural land did not amount to that much. Neverless, things worked out. I borrowed money from family and added my savings and was able to show the required amount to get the residence permit. I figured I would get a part-time job here in Finland and be able to give back the money to family members and also save up enough money to show for the next year. Sadly, this is not an English speaking country and God knows I have tried my best to get a job here, but all I could get was a door-to-door sales job which pays on basis of sales commission. I am not complaining. The rude denials and sometimes cruel insults that I get everyday just make me stronger, but I know I can never make enough money to show for the next year (the family will graciously wait for me to complete my studies). I know I can earn enough to get by and a little to show for next year, but I will be still short of 5000 euros out of the required 7000 needed. If I could get a loan I would happily pay it back with interest, but I tried every bank in India and none would give me a loan. I have tried working here to support my dream but I know now that I can't make it even after putting four hours of knocking on doors in -22 degrees temperature every evening. This is my last resort, and I hope there are people out there who would out of a kind heart chip in whatever little you can spare to help me complete my studies in two years and go back to India and help change things in the education system there. I cannot appeal in any other convincing terms than to say that I have turned every stone, and you and God are my only hope now. Thank you.
