I have sleep apnea, a condition that stops me breathing several times per hour, per night. Besides being terrifying, this has severe implications for heart health, risk for diabetes, increases depression (which, as you know, I suffer from chronically). It also decreases energy and significantly impairs my functionality during waking hours.

The only treatment, besides weight loss (which is made significantly more difficult by the apnea itself due to decreased energy and decreased metabolism) is a CPAP machine. I have been unemployed since April 2019 and cannot afford the machine. Going the government hospital route is also not an option as the waiting list is almost a year long. I have, hugely thankfully, been donated a machine by someone who no longer needs it, but I’ll have to get a service done and update outdated or worn accessories like tubing and face masks.

Please help me to breathe.

  • Good luck with this, Germaine! A sleep apnea diagnosis and CPAP treatment changed my life. After years of being exhausted, being told I had a virus, and putting on weight because I was living on sugar, a very smart psychiatrist asked about sleep apnea. I don’t know much about the SA system, since I got my CPAP through American health insurance (a fucking nightmare in itself). I was disappointed that I didn’t feel better immediately, but over time it’s worked brilliantly. Unsolicited advice: but if your doctor is happy with you using a nasal mask, maybe go for it. The full face mask made me so claustrophobic that I tore it off every night. The nasal mask is great, and doesn’t make me claustrophobic at all. Sorry I couldn’t donate more money - things are a bit tight at the moment. But happy to chat about sleep apnea over Facebook messenger at any point. Good luck! I hope this helps you as much as it did me. - Alli
