When it rains, I watch the the glistening droplets slowly trickle down the windowpane and wonder how these droplets would appear miles away, in another part of the world. Coming from a culturally diverse background, I appreciate and wish to explore new cultures.

My name is Roma Danishyar and I'm a freshmen at Arizona State University. My goal is to major in Business law and pursue a career as an international business lawyer. I have an enthusiastic and fun personality and love volunteering to help others in need. This summer there is a study abroad opportunity in Bangalore, India that would fulfill my goal of traveling to one of the most colorful countries in the world and volunteering in underprivileged communities.

The opportunity to study abroad would not only allow me to travel, but also will aid in expanding my knowledge about another culture. I will receive course credit for “contemporary politics and economics of South Asia” that relates to my major of Business Law. I will learn more about India’s history, politics, and economy. India’s rich history has created the most remarkable landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, Qutb Minar, and many other architectural forts. Being one of the most populated countries in the world, it is fascinating to see how the government plays a role in this dense population and how citizens daily lives are impacted.

Along with academics, this opportunity will benefit my professional goals of becoming more culturally aware and obtaining new perspectives and insight on various political and economic issues. International trade and the rise of technology requires many entrees to be globally aware and this program will teach me just that.

Most importantly, I will have the chance to touch other’s lives through volunteering. There are numerous volunteer opportunities that I will participate in, such as overnight camps in local villages to educate disadvantaged children, and raise awareness about various topics such as child labor and global warming in local slums. The chance to teach deprived children to read will allow me to serve those underprivileged communities while also greatly benefit those youths and their future to pursue further education and help their communities. Not only the children, but the women in these slums and villages require aid in educating themselves about ways to better take care of themselves and their environment everyday. Education is the key to success and the chance to ameliorate one’s life.

The only challenge I face in participating in this enthralling opportunity is the financial barrier. This study abroad contains numerous expenses which include a large tuition fee, visa fee, two application fees, transportation in India and books and supplies required for the coursework.

I’m very excited and passionate to study abroad and utilize this experience to help others. July is Bangalore’s wet season so after all, I will get the chance to see how the water trickles down on the other side of the world. Thank you for your generosity in advance and I will pay the help forward.
