Last February 6, 2021, my brother got into a motorcycle accident. First aid was applied to him at the emergency room ofDe La Salle University Medical Center. We paid for almost 20,000 pesos for his 6 hours stay at the said hospital. A friend of mine lent me money so that we can settle the bill.

February 7, 2021 - with the help of the HR from where my brother works and coordination with Dr. Morales, we were referred to Philippine Orthopedic Center. We were informed that my brother will go through 3 operations. According to the doctors, he will be needing an external fix which will cost 40,000 pesos and an internal fix/implant which will cost around 70,000 - 90,000 pesos.

February 8, 2021 - His first operation was done. On the same day, I was called for interview at the Social Service. It is a Government Hospital - thankful that hospital bill will not cost as much as the private. Afterwards, Dr. Supapo - his attending doctor, gave us the prescription/referral for one of the needed implants and informed us that we need 5 bags of blood for his operation.

February 9, 2021 - My brother’s friends arrived at the hospital to donate blood. I also bought the implant worth 55,000 pesos at Ti-tech Medical Trading. They only accept cash as mode of payment. With our intentions for my brother’s operation to be over and for him to recover soon, I bought the implant using the money from the donations and I also borrowed money from friends.

February 12, 2021 - This was the day my brother was scheduled for his second operation. We were just surprised after the operation that a different surgical procedure was done to him and the one that I bought was not yet used. For his external implant, it costs 40,00 pesos. I only paid 10,000 pesos as down payment because that’s the only money left from us.

February 14, 2021 - A new implant was prescribed by the doctor. It can be purchased from a different clinic - Biofix. He told us that it is better to use for my brother considering his young age. In addition to, he mentioned that we can refund the first one that we already bought.

February 16, 2021 - I proceeded to refund from Ti-tech Medical Trading. I also went to Biofix to get quotation for the implant. They gave me a quotation for Guarantee Letter for the office of the president and 2 other clinics to ask for quotations as well. If we will pay it using cash, the amount is 83,000 pesos. Since we do not have enough funds and we still have a 30,000 peso balance from the previous operation, our family decided to push through with the guarantee letter.

February 17, 2021 - We already get the refund. We returned some of the money that we have borrowed. The money left with us will be used to pay for the balance of 30,000 pesos and for the daily expenses while at the hospital.

February 17-21, 2021 - Random check ups were done to my brother because he had an infection on his wound - ecoli. The doctor is also asking for follow up with regards to our balance. We told him that we will pay as soon as we got the collected funds since we need the cash on hand for their daily expenses at the hospital. Also notify him that we ask for Government assistance for the internal medical implant.

February 26, 2021 - After almost a week, the doctor informed us that my brother needed to undergo swab test. We asked if the swab test can be performed in other hospital since its cheaper but the doctor answered that it is not possible for safety protocols.

February 27, 2021 - They already proceeded with the swab test. We payed 4,000 pesos for the test.

March 07, 2021 - The doctor called me asking why we refunded the implant that we bought. I told him that it was because he issued a new prescription and that he told my sister that it would be better for my brother. He told me that it was a misunderstanding and that what he meant is for us to do canvass and to have option.

He told me that they had a conference meeting to discuss my brother’s case. He said that my brother needed to undergo surgery as soon as possible and that there is an available operating room on Thursday, March 11, 2021. The doctor added, the earlier the better and that my brother is already infection free and his bones are ready as well.

The doctor was able to convince us to push through with the operation. As much as we like to be free from payables, we cannot rely anymore with the guarantee letter because it is not yet released and it will take another month to be processed at the hospital.

March 11, 2021 - Today, was my brother’s 3rd and hopefully final operation. We hope that there will be no complications and negative reactions with his implants. As of now, we have a balance of 30,000 pesos for the external implant and 55,000 pesos for the internal implant - a total of 85,000 pesos.

We will still be needing funds after his operation. We will be needing funds for his medication, future check-ups and physical therapies.

Any amount will help a lot.
