With every passing minute, my 10-month-old daughter’s cirrhotic liver is progressing towards failure…

Looking at Mariam’s newborn photos, we hardly saw any signs that show she was anything but a normal baby. Yes, she was a little underweight and jaundiced but so what, every other kid has it.

And then, her stool turned white, something was definitely wrong.

On her 4-month birthday, we get to know that she had Biliary Artesia. It is a serious yet rare liver disorder that causes the bile ducts to become blocked or missing. Left untreated, biliary atresia can permanently damage the liver. With the confirmation of biliary atresia, the surgeon performed a Kasai procedure, rerouting Mariam’s remaining bile ducts directly to her bowel, ensuring a modified, but mainly natural bile flow from her liver into her intestines. Toxins within the bile were expected to exit her body by the stool.

Things were not that simple in her case. We were late for the surgery. The surgery is most effective when it is performed on a 2-month-old baby. Our daughter was already 5 months old when she had her Kasai procedure. Soon after the procedure, she got a cholangitis infection (a potentially life-threatening disease).

Mariam was getting yellower, fussier, and more uncomfortable day by day. Her stomach was getting round, ballon-like, and tensed because of Ascites (a condition in which fluid collects in spaces within your abdomen).

She got admitted to the hospital again for a week and was discharged with a prescribed list of antibiotics that must be given via IV. Right now, her liver condition is not good. Cirrhosis has already been started and she might need a liver transplant sooner.

Challenges we have faced and are facing right now:

Her diagnosis was way too late. The doctor we were consulting at that time was considering her condition as neonatal jaundice.

She got edema, ascites, and cholangitis right after her surgery. The surgeon said and I quote here “the liver is very bad, it was too stiff, there were no secretions when we cut the ducts. It's very very bad”

After her surgery, we are not getting the right guidance. Every time consults her surgeon for her edema and ascites, he has only one answer i-e. “Her liver is not functioning”. We don’t know what to do. However, one thing is sure, the longer we will wait, the worse will be her condition.

How You Can Help:

In order to make this transplant happen, we need YOUR help. We need to raise around 25,000 USD in order to give her a normal life.

Other ways you can help, including sharing the story with friends and groups, which would be a

HUGE help.
Thanks a lot.
