In the wake of the destruction left by Tropical Cyclone Freddy in March 2023, Global Shapers Lilongwe are calling on the support of the global community to mobilize support for affected persons in Malawi and the communities supported by the Global Shapers Lilongwe Hub.

In addition to the nationwide grief at this disaster, it is with deepest sorrow that the Lilongwe Hub must also share that one of our own members and several close relatives of hub members have died in the destruction.

A State of Disaster has since been declared by Malawi. In its wake, Cyclone Freddy has affected tens of thousands of people and claimed the lives of over 300 citizens. From destruction of infrastructure to rehabilitation centers overcrowded with citizens who have nowhere else to go, this disaster has altered the lives of many who are in dire need of assistance. The calamity has caused immense strain on the Malawian health sector which is already overwhelmed by the worst Cholera outbreak in Malawi in two decades.

We are also calling for recognition of this disaster as an issue of Climate Justice. As the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record by the World Meteorological Organisation, we consider Cyclone Freddy and the resulting destruction and devastation as an example of how the disproportionate effects of climate change on those most vulnerable are evident in these crises. The global community, particularly high emitters, must bear responsibility for the resulting death and destruction. As we await the operationalisation of the Loss and Damage Fund established at the COP27, disaster continues to strike, the death toll continues to rise and the inequality gap increases.

Access to food, clean water, shelter and supplies are of paramount concern in our relief efforts.

Every donation matters. We will be grateful for anything you can contribute.

Please share this campaign widely.
