I finished my degree in 2007 and have spent over a decade paying off student loans and trying to save so that I can pursue my dream of being a screenwriter.
Unfortunately, the South African film industry is always developing and truly let's you embody the persona of a penniless writer.
I've realized that if I ever want to make a success of myself in my field, I need to go where the work is.
Unfortunately, the majority of work falls in countries where the currency would laughably kill the few Rand that I manage to scrape together at the end of a month.
Traveling abroad with rand, trying to find work and starting from scratch is something that I can't afford on my own and considering my unique skill-set, not something that I can realistically save for within the next decade by working locally.
I know it's a long shot, but then again, so is my career.
I'm poetic like that.
