Help Madu and Mocca fight FIP

The Odd Cat Bali opened its doors in November, 2016. Since then, we have helped and rescued over 445 cats and kittens; and we currently still care for about 40 cats between the café and a few foster homes. All our cats are vet checked, vaccinated and sterilized, then adopted out to good homes.

Over the years, the cats we have rescued have suffered with many kinds of illnesses. One of the most terrible of these diseases is Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).FIP is a viral disease of cats caused by certain strains of a virus called the Feline Coronavirus (FeCV). The FeCV itself is quite common, and most cats infected with the virus show very mild or no symptoms. In about 10% of cats infected with FeCV, however, a mutation of the virus can alter its biological behavior. This mutation results in white blood cells becoming infected with virus and spreading it throughout the cat’s body. When this occurs, the virus is referred to as FIP. Once a cat develops clinical FIP, the disease is usually progressive and almost always fatal. We are so full of hope that a new therapy has recently become available, however it is very expensive and difficult to find.

A couple weeks ago, two of our café cats were diagnosed with the effusive (wet) form of FIP: Madu & Mocca. Until now, when a cat was diagnosed with FIP, there was nothing we could do except treat the symptoms and keep them as comfortable as possible until it was time to allow them to pass. We have nursed 18 FIP effusive cats in the café since we first opened. We have also supported other cat owners whose cats also unfortunately came down with this deadly disease.

But luckily, a few months ago, some friends of the café found a way to source the BASMIFIP treatment from Malaysia. Both cats were successfully treated. Now one of these cat owners is helping us get the treatment as well. This is an expensive and very long treatment. The cats receive an injection of the BASMIFIP drug once a day for 84 days. We estimate that we will need approximately 11 vials of the drug for each cat, so 22 in total. Each vial costs Rp 1,635,734 IDR(check link https://www.basmifip.com/products/gs-441524-7ml-vial-20-mg-ml). It is an expensive treatment, and it was a dilemma deciding to proceed with it, but we just can’t watch our cats die once again now that we know we can do something to save them.

But we need your help. We can’t afford to treat Madu and Mocca on our own, so we are creating this fundraiser to help pay for their treatment. We will take in charge all other medical needs they may have such as blood tests, liver and kidney supplements, vet checks and so on.

Everyone who has visited the café over the last 3 years knows and loves Madu. He is our little mascot. Madu was rescued when he was about 6 weeks old; he didn’t have any eyeballs. He is completely blind, but that doesn’t stop him from doing normal cat things. He is brave, smart, and so affectionate, and is particularly bonded with one of our Odd Cat employees. He has fought so many battles and he deserves the hope this treatment can provide him.

Mocca is a beautiful ginger cat that we took in last May when her owners lost their jobs and couldn’t care for her and their other three cats anymore. The three other cats quickly got adopted, but Mocca was so terrified of people that no one could touch her until January of this year. Sadly, we believe her friendliness came with her illness, and she was asking for help. She deserves us to show her love and comfort, and she too deserves a second chance.

With great hope that we could fund-raise to help Madu and Mocca, we started their treatment on the 17^th of February 2021. We were lucky to get an emergency vial of medication to get them started while we set up this fund raiser. Both cats are still eating, and are still as bright and as active as they can be with their condition. Starting now, before their condition got worse, gives us hope that the treatment will be successful. But we really need help to get them through the next few months. We need to raise a total of Rp 36,000,000 to complete the treatment. Every donation counts, no matter the amount. This is the only way we can save them.
